We’re getting closer to the point where Indianapolis-area theater companies and presenters announce their 2008-2009 seasons.
Already, Footlite Musicals has staked out territory that includes “Crazy for You,” “Miss Saigon” and—the one I’m most looking forward to—the local community theater premiere of “Once On This Island,” the wonderful Caribbean-flavored tuner from the folks who brought you “Ragtime.”
So what are you hoping to see on theater lineups next season?
More Martin McDonagh from the Phoenix?
Local takes on newer Broadway hit musicals such as “Hairspray”?
At last, the Indianapolis appearance of “Wicked”?
Is there an old favorite that you’re dying to see one of the newer companies attempt? An off-Broadway hit that you’re hoping finds its way to the IRT?
Personally, I’m still hoping that someone will stage “A Very Merry Unauthorized Children’s Scientology Pageant,” but I’m not holding my breath. I do keep expecting to see “Shenandoah” show up on the Beef & Boards lineup and wish the IRT or a university theater would have a go at “Love’s Labours Lost.”
I wouldn’t be surprised the Phoenix and the IRT had “Rabbit Hole” and Sarah Ruhl’s “The Clean House” in their sights.
And it seems just a matter of time before Theatre on the Square gives me a chance to see off-Broadway’s “Zanna Don’t” or “Evil Dead: The Musical.”

Keep your eyes open for some amazing things from the other theaters in town. Buck Creek Players has announced the shows, just not the dates. The shows include:
The Mystery of Edwin Drood (Musical)
Scrooge & Marley - A Christmas Carol (different version of the classic tale)
Dancing at Lughnasa
Grey Gardens (Musical)
Annie (play-a-part fundraiser where you can buy your part!)
Plus they have slotted an additional show that has yet to be announced.
Watch for more information to be released with dates in the coming weeks!

As for Wicked, I read the book a few years ago and have been wanting to see the musical since I can remember. But there's some kind of cool factor in hearing my friends who have seen it say things like My husband took me to Chicago to see Wicked for our anniversary, or My daughter took me for my birthday when I went to see her in L.A. Maybe I should just take a road trip already.
The musical Grey Gardens will have its local premiere as part of Buck Creek Players' 2008-2009 season.

But that is just double talk...
Clowes is plenty big enough to house any road show you want to throw at it.
Hell, there are High Schools in the area that can house them.
It is politics and ticket sales. You want to see better shows sooner... buy more tickets, Indy.
It is not double talk at all. Look at the 2 other areas where Wicked is or was currently playing. In Chicago, the Ford Theatre seats 2500. In Cincy, Wicked recently ended its 2nd extended run in 3 yars at the Aronoff, a new facility that seats 2700. Clowes can only seat a little over 2000, so do the math. When Wicked comes to Indy in 2009, it will play the Murat, which also has a seating capacity of 2700, of which about half have terrible sightlines. I much prefer Clowes over the Murat, but its days as hosting part of Indy's broadway series are numbered.
But perhaps that's fodder for another post.
