Ice likely to play more games at revamped Pan Am facilities

The Indiana Ice expects to play more games next season at downtown’s Pan Am Plaza following a renovation of the building’s ice rinks.

Details of building owner Kite Realty Group Trust’s plans to upgrade the facility are unknown. A spokesman for the Indianapolis-based real estate company declined to comment, but said the parties involved would likely provide a statement within the next few weeks.

Calls from IBJ to the Indiana Ice, an amateur hockey team that plays in the United States Hockey League, were not returned Friday morning.

But Bob Schultz, a spokesman for Indianapolis Downtown Inc., said Kite and the Ice have reached a deal that involves renovating the building to allow for more seating. The facility has about 1,500 seats.

“I just know the relationship between Kite and the Ice is going to generate a lot of excitement for the facility,” Schultz said.

How the renovation fits into Kite's long-term plan for the facility is uncertain. Long-term plans for the property call for getting rid of the ice rinks.

The Ice has split its home games this season between two downtown locations, playing 14 games at Pan Am Plaza and 21 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. An agreement with Kite Realty for use of Pan Am Plaza next season might increase the number of games played at the smaller venue.

Attendance figures for the current season were unavailable Friday morning, but the team averaged 3,720 spectators in the 2011-12 season, according to hockydb.com.

Until this season, the Ice had played most of its home games at the Indiana State Fairgrounds coliseum. The team was displaced when work started on a $63 million project to renovate the facility and construct a smaller, 500-seat arena for youth hockey games.

State fair officials are uncertain whether the Ice will return once work is finished in August 2014 on the 8,200-seat facility formerly known as the Pepsi Coliseum.

“We don’t have a contract with [the Ice], so that remains to be seen,” state fair spokesman Andy Klotz said. “All options are open.”

The pending agreement between Kite Realty and the Ice for expanded use of Pan Am Plaza follows an announcement Wednesday from the Indiana World Skating Academy that it plans to vacate the building’s ice rinks this month and begin searching for a new location.

Skating academy officials said “growing financial obligations” and the property owner’s long-term plan to redevelop the Pan Am block led to the decision.

Kite Realty previously said it hopes to build a large mixed-use project on the property that could include a high-rise hotel, restaurants, and retail and residential space. The project would eliminate the two rinks.

The academy, a fixture in downtown Indianapolis since 1987, was almost evicted from the site in 2008 after the Indiana Sports Corp. sold Pan Am Plaza to a partnership of Indianapolis-based Kite Realty and California-based Coastal Partners LLC. The IWSA was given a matter of months to get out to make way for redevelopment of the site, but reached an agreement to stay when those plans stalled during the recession.

  • Other peoples money
Pan am plaza as well as IWSA is unsafe for business. Renovation's, equipment, employees, parking garage, Plaza, and with the building crumbling. Who in their right mind would invest in this money pit? Unless it is going to be torn down and revamped. Years of being badly ran by a corrupt director and board with no money ever going into proper maintenance the facility is in shambles. Greed destroyed this place and a so called Director making 6 figures working part time with no idea on how to market or even do proper business. Making low wage workers pay for parking, did everything possible not to pay over-time, and unsafe working conditions. Along with the nepotism, outrageous salary bonuses, ethic issues, and so much more killed the facility. Do not invest in a renovation of this property unless it is being torn down and built from scratch. So many leaks, mold, old outdated equipment, and so on. Makes this place a money pit.
  • Agreed....
    ... yes, very weird timing.
  • Odd
I find the timing of this announcement to be rather odd, with the news yesterday of the academy moving. I understand they have been needing to move for a while, but if the main reason was upkeep and the need for reno, couldn't they just stay a while longer if Kite is ponying up for renovations. It is just kind of peculiar.

  1. Uh, sorry Johnnie, but you are incorrect. Despite the assertions by yourself and various defenders and captains, sports attendance is NOT off significantly at most sporting events in the US. Variances in attendance has been in the range of single digits, both + & - for years now. MLB has had most of its best overall attendance nubers in the last decade, and that trend has been consistent for most major sporting events. The number one issue cited by most fans when asked about attendance is the overall cost of attending. The presence of HD and big screen televisions in home doesn't even register, as a factor for not attending an event. VALUE in the product is the key, and apparently is something lacking in the current ICS. What other explanation is there when with what is routinely touted as the "best" racing on the planet, fans are staying away in DROVES. A "close" title battle into the last event at Fontana, with the "cars and stars" of the ICS, and who showed up? MAYBE 8K. Sorry, but HD TV isn't to blame for that kind of fan apathy.

  3. If she was worth the $ the public outcry over direct tv dropping them would have kept them on their dishes as we have seen with other companies. I too quit watching channel 13 after she showed up since I left channel 8 because of her all show rather than production results. When Randy on 8 corrected her she had a big head and incorrectly challenged his correction for pronunciation of a city. Other antics while she matures was too much for me with her very inaccurate forecasts. All the forecasters were predicting rain until Thursday except Chris. They predicted sunny on Thursday but instead of rain until Thursday upon which the sun would finally make it out in full glory Chris was right on the money just as I too predicted looking at the radar on weather.gov. One thing I love about Angela is the fear you can see in her every time it thunders in the winter. It far exceeds the entertainment value of her body language (high heel noise drags, depression, etc) when her forecasts are so incorrect. Her hair stands on end, you have to see it!!!
