Shutdown to cost Indiana $33K each day it persists

Back to TopCommentsE-mailPrintBookmark and Share

Gov. Mike Pence's office says the partial federal government shutdown will cost Indiana about $33,000 for each day the budget impasse continues.

The governor's office said Indiana has enough money on hand to continue many of the largest joint federal-state programs, like Medicaid, and jobless benefits through the partial shutdown. Pence spokeswoman Christy Denault said Indiana should also be able to fund welfare benefits and a program that aids pregnant women, mothers and their children through October.

Office of Management and Budget Director Chris Atkins told WIBC-FM the state's cash reserves will keep many programs going up to a month before running short.

Indiana is dipping into its surplus to put 244 National Guard staff on Indiana's payroll for at least one week.

  • Tea Party Pence
You're not Governor Pence's constituency, he cares little about the everyday Hoosier.
  • VOTING
Many people are under the impression that they have to vote Democrat or Republican so they pick the lesser of the two evils and vote for one or the other. What we must all do is vote independent to be able to change this Corporation run click of a congress we now have and return this country to one that is run by the common people. I can suggest a vote for someone in the Green Party would be a vote in the right direction.
  • Confused
Pence seems to be talking out both sides of his mouth when discussing the Federal Government Shut Down. I am not surprised by the flip-flop approach taken by Pence, I just wonder if the voters now realize that Pence is just another Washington Insider who relocated to Indiana.
  • Not Presidential
Real disappointing from pence. I thought he was the future of moderate conservatives. Now, you look like all the other Tea Party people that are trying to sabotage the country. Not Presidential material. Scary.
  • Um Kay
Read the article. Local subsistence runs out in a month or less.
  • What whining?
This article doesn't mention whining. Pence's office simply provided information.
  • shut down
yes we planed as a state and have funds... now perhaps as we go forward we should stop taking money to fund these programs from the DC and oh wait that's right these funds from DC are OUR TAX DOLLARS from INDIANA.. so lets just fund Indiana programs and stop paying our hard earned money to 800,000 fed workers... lets instead keep Indiana healthy babies and all day kindergarten and start a healthy seniors lunch program, something more useful that letting a million plus " non essential workers " continue to eat off our states plate!
  • Fiscal Conservatism at its finest...
    Gotta love these guys...
  • Worthwhile??
Pence recently said the government shutdown was "worthwhile", and now he's whining about a $33k daily price-tag. Please, he's towing the party line and playing politics with people's lives.

    1. I had read earlier this spring that Noodles & Co was going to open in the Fishers Marketplace (which is SR 37 and 131st St, not 141st St, just FYI). Any word on that? Also, do you happen to know what is being built in Carmel at Pennsylvania and Old Meridian? May just be an office building but I'm not sure.

    2. I'm sorry, but you are flat out wrong. There are few tracks in the world with the history of IMS and probably NO OTHER as widely known and recognized. I don't care what you think about the stat of Indy Car racing, these are pretty hard things to dispute.

    3. Also wondering if there is an update on the Brockway Pub-Danny Boy restaurant/taproom that was planned for the village as well?

    4. Why does the majority get to trample on the rights of the minority? You do realize that banning gay marriage does not rid the world of gay people, right? They are still going to be around and they are still going to continue to exist. The best way to get it all out of the spotlight? LEGALIZE IT! If gay marriage is legal, they will get to stop trying to push for it and you will get to stop seeing it all over the news. Why do Christians get to decide what is moral?? Why do you get to push your religion on others? How would legalizing gay marriage expose their lifestyle to your children? By the way, their lifestyle is going to continue whether gay marriage is legalized or not. It's been legal in Canada for quite a while now and they seem to be doing just fine. What about actual rules handed down by God? What about not working on Sundays? What about obeying your parents? What about adultery? These are in the 10 Commandments, the most important of God's rules. Yet they are all perfectly legal. What about divorce? Only God is allowed to dissolve a marriage so why don't you work hard to get divorce banned? Why do you get to pick and choose the parts of the Bible you care about?

    5. Look at the bright side. With the new Lowe's call center, that means 1000 jobs at $10 bucks an hour. IMS has to be drooling over all that disposable income. If those employees can save all their extra money after bills, in five years they can go to the race LIVE. Can you say attendance boost?
