Obamacare exchange enrollment reaches 3,500 in Indiana

Nearly 2,800 Hoosiers enrolled in a private insurance plan on the Obamacare exchange in November, nearly four times as many as did so in October.

The faster pace of enrollment was mirrored in the other 35 states that are also relying on the federally run Healthcare.gov web site for online enrollment. The Obama administration worked feverishly in November to correct major technical problems with the web site that prevented numerous Americans from enrolling.

Even so, the pace of enrollment in the federal exchange will need to be nearly 12 times faster than it was in November if enrollment via the exchange is going to meet a federal projection of more than 4.8 million enrollees by the end of March.

According to a report issued Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 137,204 actually selected a private health insurance plan during October and November, with about 110,000 of them doing so in November.

In 14 states and the District of Columbia, which are operating their own insurance exchanges, enrollment also surged in November, to nearly 148,000 people, compared with about 80,000 in October.

Enrollment via the state-based exchanges will need to triple its pace to meet an overall federal projection of 7 million enrollees via the Obamacare exchanges.

All told, 364,682 Americans have selected a private insurance plan through the exchanges, which were created by the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Another 1.9 million are in the process of buying private coverage on the exchanges.

In Indiana, so far, 3,492 people have selected a private insurance plan for 2014. In October, the total was just 701.

The insurers offering plans on the exchange in Indiana are Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, MDwise, Physicians Health Plan of Northern Indiana, and Centene-Celtic. Those insurers issued projections earlier this year that envisioned 200,000 Hoosiers signing up for coverage through the exchanges in 2014.

  • Sandy, Huh?
So Sandy, making sure you and your family has health insurance, in other words, assuming personal responsibility, doesn't "fit in" with your "values" or pride in your country?
  • No ACA
I am in Indiana and I do not want the ACA. I will be losing my insurance in January but I will just pay the fine. Everyone has the freedom to do what they need to do for themselves and their families. I don't put down anyone who does sign up , but this doesn't fit with my values and my pride in my country.
  • Christian Values? Where
Saving one life when faced with a controlling political party determined to display selfishness, heartlessness and a total lack of empathy with anyone except the super rich,is a victory. How many could we save if the Hoosier GOP had a soul, or any Christian values.
  • GOP Is Major Roadblock
Have you seen any effort by the Governor ore the legislature to encourage and help uninsured Hoosiers sign up for the Affordable Care Act. Instead, they are doing everything to make sure the Act fails. The state GOP has no credibility when it says it advocates for Hoosier families.
  • It's what the State wants
The Indiana State, ran by GOP, does not want to provide Medicare type coverage for all that qualify, meaning that hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers will have no way of obtaining health insurance, even if they work hard to get it. _____ The exchanges and their subsidies are the only way to get decent private individual insurance policy with any chance at affordability. ____ Hundred thousands more Hoosiers will still end up receiving their insurance from the exchanges, even as the State GOP is suing HHS to prevent Hoosiers from receiving Federal assistance. _____ The exchanges are starting to work. And this terrifies the GOP.
  • Its the cost stupid
If there are 600,000 uninsured in Indiana and 3,500 sign up for insurance (and God knows how many were dropped by their companies) how can we call this "progress"

    2. We are a nation of speed. All of our younger lives are filled with deadlines, quotas and bottom lines. We start to ease out of the pressured rat-race when we finally see "retirement." The most enjoyable travel on the planet is passenger rail service. Indy to Chicago does not beat Megabus or Southwest Airlines in speed. Passenger rail however has the best seating, mammoth legroon, seat backs that recline to more than 45 degrees and employers that really want you to return as a customer. Indiana municipalities need to maintain subsidies to support this transportation mode. Losing it is loss for all of us.
