Mays, who has been at the newspaper since 1998, made the announcement on Tuesday. Her last day will be Friday.
Mays was named to the IURC post on Feb. 17 by Gov. Mitch Daniels to fill the vacancy left by Jeffrey Golc, whose term expired Dec. 31.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working at the Recorder and turning the paper around financially, editorially and graphically,” Mays said in a written statement. “It’s been a true testament of love and endurance.”
Mays’ uncle, Bill Mays, will become publisher of the 115-year-old African-American publication. He bought the newspaper in 1990 and also owns Indianapolis-based Mays Chemical Co., one of the state's largest minority-owned businesses.
Carolene Mays served in the Indiana House from 2002 until 2008, when she unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for the 7th congressional district seat now held by Rep. Andre Carson.
The five-member commission's responsibilities include overseeing the state's electric, natural gas and telephone utilities. State law allows no more than three of its members to be of the same political party.
