The Indiana Fraternal Order of Police is staffing up its Muncie call center and hopes to hire 100 additional workers in the
struggling Indiana city.
While the call-center jobs aren't high-paying, they are welcome news in Muncie, where unemployment is 11.7 percent—nearly
2 percentage points higher than the overall state.
Fund-raising center manager Shane Haney said the organization is following a consultant's advice to triple the time spent
on the phone with potential donors from 500 hours to 1,500 hours. The goal is to raise more money, Haney said, but he didn't
know the specific dollar amount targeted.
The state FOP, based in Indianapolis, has about 14,000 members, Haney said. Donations support death benefits, scholarships
and the FOP memorial.
Haney said the fund-raising center currently has 22 employees. Most telephone sales representatives work about 20 hours a
week. Pay starts at $9 per hour.
"We're trying to do it as quickly as possible, hiring good-quality voices we can train," he said.
