Harlan Bakeries plans to expand its Georgetown Road production facility by 65,000 square feet to make a new line of products—creating
43 jobs in the process.
The company intends to invest $9.7 million in the facility and equipment as it grows its line of commercial wholesale food
products, according to a request for tax abatements tied to the expansion project. A timeline and other details about
the deal with what was identified as a new out-of-state client were not immediately available.
The family-owned company, based in Avon, got its start as a bagel retailer, but is among the largest wholesale bakeries in
the country. It employed 1,800 people in 2008, the last year for which figures were immediately available. (Read a 2008 IBJ

Harlan is asking the Metropolitan Development Commission for tax abatements on $2.4 million in new equipment and $7.3 million
in real estate improvements. The potential tax savings on the seven-year abatements would total about $550,000.
Harlan estimates that its expansion in Pike Township would retain 343 jobs at an average wage of $11.62 per hour, and create
another 43 positions at an average of $10.88 per hour. The site at 7575 Georgetown Road is in a designated "economic
revitalization area," but that designation expires on Feb. 28, 2011. The MDC can offer partial abatement after that date.
MDC staff members believe Harlan's expansion at Georgetown Road could lead to future investments in Marion County.
