More than 700 workers will lose their jobs when an A.J. Wright distribution center in South Bend closes next year as part of as a national consolidation by parent TJX Cos.

The first of 725 layoffs is expected to occur Feb. 8, according to a letter filed with the state Department of Workforce Development late last week.

On Friday, Framingham, Mass.-based TJX announced plans to cut 4,400 jobs nationwide as it closes 71 of its A.J. Wright discount stores and two distribution centers. Another 91 locations will be converted to T.J. Maxx, Marshalls or HomeGoods stores.

The chain has four stores in Indianapolis—at 53rd Street and Keystone Avenue, on South East Street at Southern Plaza, on Crawfordsville Road in Speedway, and along East 10th Street in the Linwood Square shopping center. The Indianapolis stores are not on a list of stores slated for closures, which means they will likely be converted into other TJX stores.

The South Bend distribution center closing is expected to be permanent.
