Tavern owners in Franklin will mothball their ashtrays next month following the passage of a smoking ban May 4. City councilors
voted 6-1 to make the ban one of the most restrictive in the state.
Franklin, south of Indianapolis in Johnson County, previously
passed a workplace smoking ban in 2006, but excluded some areas, including 21-and-over bars and private clubs. The new ordinance,
set to take effect 30 days from passage, has been expanded to include all enclosed workplaces, public places and city-owned
facilities.
Roughly 35 cities in Indiana now en
force some form of a smoking ban. The entire Hoosier state has yet to go smoke-free, though. To no avail, Rep. Charlie
Brown, D-Gary, tried to muster support for a statewide smoking ban
during the waning days of the legislative session by proposing to exempt casinos.
