Canadian National Railway Co. on Wednesday announced plans to relocate part of its operations from Markham, Ill., to northwest Indiana.

Montreal-based CN said it will spend $163 million to redevelop the existing Kirk Yard railroad facility in Gary and add up to 251 workers by 2015.

The redevelopment will include building a 155,000-square-foot locomotive maintenance and repair facility.

CN operates more than 20,600 miles of track in North America, offering connections to ports on the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. Its rail network serves close to 75 percent of the U.S. population and all major Canadian markets. The company has about 22,000 employees.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered CN up to $2.95 million in performance-based tax credits and up to $250,000 in training grants based on the company's job-creation plans. The city of Gary also offered funds generated from the issuance of a tax increment financing bond.
