Public education improvement initiative The Mind Trust has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The money will be used to support the work of the Indianapolis not-for-profit group’s Cities for Education Entrepreneurship Trust, which is a network of 18 city-based not-for-profits, foundations and mayors’ offices that support educational innovation.

CEE identifies best practices, and recently its members have been looking at school models that use technology to personalize learning for students.

“An emerging group of entrepreneurs are developing fundamentally new visions for how to leverage technology to personalize learning and redefine what happens in the classroom,” said Ethan Gray, vice president and director of the CEE Trust.

The Gates grant represents a significant funding source for trust. The not for profit’s most recent IRS 1099 Form shows in 2009 it received contributions and grants totaling $3.9 million.

Mind Trust reported total assets that year of $5.5 million.

Over the years, The Mind Trust has invested more than $5 million to bring to Indianapolis educational initiatives including Teach for America, College Summit, The New Teacher Project, Diploma Plus and Stand for Children.
