More than 220 employees at Best Buy Co. Inc.’s warehouse in Franklin will lose their jobs at the end of January when the company closes the site a few months earlier than expected.

The Minneapolis-based appliance and electronics retailer originally notified the Indiana Department of Workforce Development in May that it would shut down the facility by the end of March 2012.

But Best Buy on Thursday followed up with a letter to the department stating the company will close the warehouse at 2001 Commerce Parkway by the end of January, resulting in the loss of 223 jobs.

Best Buy had 301 employees at the warehouse in May, when the company told the state it would terminate jobs in phases, beginning with 34 in July.

Operations at the plant, located near U.S. 31 on the north side of Franklin south of Indianapolis, will be integrated into other parts of the company, Best Buy said.

The warehouse employed almost 1,000 people seven years ago. In 2004, the company laid off 415 employees—nearly half the work force at the facility.

Best Buy operates 1,069 stores in the United States.

Best Buy said employees at the Franklin warehouse can apply for other positions within the company.
