A Columbus company that makes photovoltaic solar panels has received the stamp of approval from Underwriter’s Laboratories.

Nusun Solar called the UL 1703 certification a pre-production milestone toward mass production of its panels, aimed at commercial and residential markets.

The company was founded in 2009 by Ryan Stout, former vice president of operations at Yorktown-based BatteryXpress.

Nusun has already appeared on the radar of Indianapolis solar installer Johnson Melloh Solutions.

“Their solar panels are top-of-the-line, yet able to meet many of our project budget constraints,” said Melloh’s president, Nick Melloh.

Many solar applications are happening on the commercial level rather than on the residential side, where homeowners often find it hard to recoup a payback during the time they live in a home.

Legislation has been proposed on state and federal levels that would allow homeowners to finance solar panel installation in such a way that the cost could be spread to future owners of a home as part of a special tax levy. Such a proposed financing mechanism failed last year in the Indiana General Assembly.

Solar panel manufacturing became infamous with the collapse last year of California-based Solyndra, to which the Obama administration provided a $535 million federal loan guarantee.

Nusun was offered up to $2.25 million in performance-based tax credits by the Indiana Economic Development Corp. and $825,000 of incentives from the city of Columbus and Bartholomew County.
