The global reach of Columbus-based Cummins Inc. was a primary consideration in two recent executive appointments.

The company created an Ethics and Compliance organization and named Deputy General Counsel Mark Sifferlen to lead it.

Sifferlen, who has been with Cummins since 2000, will become the company’s first vice president of ethics and compliance. (He will also take the role of corporate secretary, focusing on compliance with the Securities and Exchange Commission and New York Stock Exchange.)

The company said the new internal structure is to ensure that Cummins maintains high ethical standards as it grows throughout the world. Cummins notes that it’s been ranked for years by Ethisphere and Corporate Responsibility magazine. No doubt, Cummins executives also are aware that the Department of Justice has been cracking down on U.S. firms that accept bribes for overseas business.

Sifferlen currently oversees online compliance training and sensitive topics such as bribery and export controls.

Carole Casto, director of community engagement, is the new executive director of corporate communications.

Casto played a key role in expanding Cummins’ corporate responsibility program outside the United States. Previously, Casto directed the Six Sigma program, saving the company more than $32 million in less than two years.
