Cummins Inc. hopes a smartphone app can help build its central Indiana talent pool.

The company’s first app offers a virtual tour of Cummins diesel engines and subsystems. The app features three-dimensional, up-close views of Cummins’ leading technologies.

Richard Whitney, global recruiting brand leader, said the goal was to introduce middle and high school students to the technology and send them the message that there are plenty of jobs in engineering. At the same time, the app serves as an introduction to professional engineers who might be working in other fields.

Cummins projects that it will fill 4,000 jobs around the world this year, and 1,600 of them will be in the United States, Whitney said.

About half of Cummins’ U.S. jobs will be in Columbus, which is the headquarters, and in Seymour and Indianapolis. Most of those Indiana openings, about 70 percent, will be for engineers or other technical personnel, Whitney said.

“We’re trying to recruit the smartest people we can find,” he said.

The more engineers Cummins finds in Indiana, he noted, the fewer it has to recruit from overseas.
