James Vento, president and CEO of Easter Seals Crossroads, is retiring after 32 years at the helm of the Indianapolis-based agency, the not-for-profit said Wednesday.

Vento’s last day with the organization, which provides services to individuals with disabilities and special needs, will be March 31, 2013.

Easter Seals Crossroads Board President Jeff Hokanson said a succession committee has been assembled to recruit “a capable new leader who will build on Jim Vento’s legacy.” The group would like to have a new leader chosen before Vento’s retirement, it said.

Under Ventos, Easter Seals Crossroad’s annual budget grew from about $2 million a year to more than $14 million. The group greatly expanded assistive technology development and computer-training services during that time, and was among the first local groups to initiate an autism program.

The agency estimates that more than 120,000 people received “life-changing services” during Vento’s tenure.
