Indiana’s hotels hosted more visitors last year, according to a survey by Hendersonville-based Smith Travel Research.

Year-over-year hotel occupancy rose 3.5 percent, to 56.2 percent, the survey said.

The Association of Indiana Convention & Visitors Bureaus attributed the increase to the throng of visitors who trekked to Indianapolis for Super Bowl festivities, in addition to more corporate and leisure travelers statewide.

The average daily rate for hotel rooms in Indiana also increased, from $79.21 to $82.99. Overall room revenue climbed 8.8 percent while room demand grew 3.8 percent, the survey said.

More than 70 percent of state tourism bureaus said they are “very optimistic or optimistic” about the next 12 months of travel, according to a separate, informal survey of state tourism bureaus.
