Allison Transmission Holdings Inc. has moved deeper into the hybrid vehicle market by adding products for a broader array of trucks and buses.
The company on March 6 publicly unveiled a hybrid propulsion system for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, production for which will begin later this year.
Previously, buses were the only hybrid vehicles the Indianapolis manufacturer supplied to.
Hybrid buses are a relatively small market for the company, and they took a hit last year.
Allison reported its sales of hybrid propulsion systems for transit buses dropped 14 percent in 2012, to $115 million. That was about 5 percent of total revenue of $2.1 billion.
The company primarily focuses on automatic transmissions for commercial and military vehicles that have traditional internal-combustion engines.
