On May 13, he will take over the Hawaii Opera Theatre, known as HOT.
Crookall left his ISO position in early 2012 after a challenging seven-year period that included the ouster of former music director Mario Venazago, the hiring of new director Krzystof Urbanski, and ongoing attempts to weather the financial crisis that would eventually lead to a musicians lockout.
He takes the reins of a half-century-old opera company, the only professional one in Hawaii and one of the largest performing arts organizations in the state. It is based in Honolulu.
HOT’s three-show 2013/2014 season includes productions of “Turandot” and “The Mikado.”
Crookall, who served as chief executive of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra before moving to Indianapolis, told Pacific News Network, “Opera has been the goal of my career.”
