As a subscriber you can listen to articles at work, in the car, or while you work out. Subscribe NowBall State University has launched a capital campaign to fund $20 million in improvements to its sports facilities in Muncie, with a $3 million gift in hand to help sustain the drive.
The George and Frances Ball Foundation has committed $3 million to the campaign’s goals, which include creating a practice facility for basketball and volleyball teams attached to Worthen Arena; renovations to the school’s softball and baseball complexes; and an indoor golf practice facility with locker rooms and coaches’ offices.
BSU competes at the NCAA Division I level in the Mid-American Conference. The school rolled out details of its plans for upgrading its athletic facilities on Saturday.
“Every aspect of Division I athletics is competitive,” said Bill Scholl, Ball State’s athletic director. “We’re competing with other universities not just to attract and retain top athletes and coaches. We must also provide great facilities so our teams can train, compete and succeed in the MAC.”
Titled “Cardinal Commitment: Developing Champions,” the campaign has a target end date of December 2014. It already has raised close to $13 million toward the final goal, including the Ball Foundation’s gift, according to the Muncie Star Press.
Other improvements will include a new football team complex attached to Scheumann Stadium, and general upgrades to the 1967 stadium.
