The head of AT&T’s operations in Indiana has left the company after more than 13 years at the helm.

George Fleetwood’s tenure as AT&T Indiana’s president officially ended Sept. 1, he told IBJ on Thursday.

“It just became apparent that this was a good time for my departure,” said Fleetwood, 59.

“There was no specific event” that caused him to leave, he said. “I just felt like I had done what I had been doing long enough.”

In an email, a company spokesman stated: “George Fleetwood has left the company to pursue other interests, and we wish him well.”

Fleetwood began working for the company in 1997, which was Ameritech Indiana at the time, as the vice president of government relations. He moved up to president in 2000.

He was unsure whether he would retire or if he would pursue other work. His first post-AT&T plan is to write a book about his world travels.

Paul LaSchiazza, president of AT&T's Midwest region, is serving as the interim president of AT&T Indiana while the company searches for Fleetwood’s permanent replacement.
