Nestle USA plans to invest $72 million to add a seventh production line to its plant in Anderson, the beverage maker announced Tuesday.

The Anderson City Council last year gave preliminary approval to a tax break worth as much as $14 million in hopes of landing the investment—and the new jobs that could accompany it.

At the time, Nestle's capital investment was estimated to be $166 million.

Nestle employs about 700 workers at the Anderson plant overlooking Interstate 69. A spokesman said officials don’t know yet how many positions will be added.

Expected to be up and running sometime next year, the new line will increase production capacity for Nestle’s Boost Complete nutritional drink and its Carnation Breakfast Essentials, according to a news release.

The Swiss-based company considered several possible locations before choosing Anderson. The release cited the central Indiana community’s “attractive economic development policies,” strong workforce and proximity to high-quality dairy farms.

Workers at the Anderson plant, which opened in 2009, make and distribute Nestle’s Coffee-Mate and ready-to-drink Nesquik products. The facility also serves as a warehouse and distribution center for cold items including Nestle Toll House Refrigerated Cookie Dough and Buitoni pasta.
