Jeffrey D. Jackson, a 25-year veteran in the transportation industry, will take over the position Nov. 15.
Over the last 15 years, Jackson has worked in Durango, Colo., as the chief operating officer of American Heritage Railways, the parent company for the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Great Smoky Mountains Railroad and Rail Events Inc.
He was previously interim executive director of Tri-Rail in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Jackson grew up a Hoosier in Connersville and graduated from Indiana University after studying urban affairs, with a concentration in transportation and mass-transit management.
Bingaman announced in July he was leaving CIRTA after six years with the organization to join architecture and engineering firm HNTB Indiana as director of planning.
Created by state statute in 2004, CIRTA is charged with coordinating public transit services throughout central Indiana. Bingaman has been one of the primary voices supporting a proposed mass-transit plan for the area, as the issue entered and then stalled this year in the Indiana General Assembly.
CIRTA, which has eight employees, is one of three lead partners in Indy Connect, the initiative to develop the comprehensive transportation plan for central Indiana. CIRTA also operates the Indy Express Bus Service between Carmel and downtown Indianapolis, and oversees the Commuter Connect regional rideshare program.
