The chairman and CEO of pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Co. has been elected chairman of United Way Worldwide's board to help lead the nation's largest charity.

The Alexandria-based United Way announced Wednesday that John Lechleiter will serve a two-year term as board chairman.

United Way President and CEO Brian Gallagher said Lechleiter will help strengthen the not-for-profit network's capacity to meet growing human needs around the world.

Lechleiter has been Indianapolis-based Lilly's CEO since 2008 and its chairman since 2009. He joined the company in 1979 as an organic chemist in research and development.

In a prepared statement, Lechleiter says United Way improves lives and has an indispensable role in making changes in education, income and health for communities around the world.
