Revamped M&I Plaza lands King David, Side Street Deli

M&I Plaza IndianapolisThe main entrance to downtown's M&I Plaza is getting a $1 million makeover as the 28-story building prepares to welcome two new restaurant tenants. King David Dogs plans to take a prime street-level space along Pennsylvania Street that over the years has been home to the gym Curves and restaurant Hardees. King David is moving from its current home about a block south of M&I Plaza, also along Pennsylvania Street. Meantime, the former home of Sahm's at the Plaza will serve as a new location for Side Street Deli & Grill, which has locations at 20th and Illinois streets and near 86th Street and Keystone Avenue. King David is taking 3,700 square feet, and Side Street is taking about 5,500 square feet. The building's owner, White Plains, N.Y.-based True North Management Group, plans to install a new entrance plaza for the building with granite pavers and enhanced landscaping stretching along Ohio and Pennsylvania streets. The pavers will extend to the street. Construction began this week, and completion is scheduled for September. Robyn Smart of Lee & Associates represented the landlord in the restaurant deals, Eric Gershman of Gershman Brown Crowley represented King David, and David Beauregard of BeauMar Group represented Side Street.

  • Cool!
    Glad to see other property owners of buildings that have largerly gone un remodeled or enhanced since the 80's and 90's are paying attention to the other improvements and investments from the private companies and government. This will compliment all the other new sidewalks, streets, and improved facades. I hope King David will have space to permit outside seating as well.

    I hope this means for space! It is sad to see them move from their current location, so much history, but if they are gaining more space, more power to them!

      Yes, we will have more space and LOTS more seating. The plan is for almost 3x the number of seats that we currently have.

      It's great to see Side Street Grille move closer to downtown. They have awesome food and their Illinois Street location is always too busy for me to grab lunch. Nice to have another breakfast place too.
    • Hous and location
      I love King David's, but I hate the hours. I live downtown and work out of the city. By the time I get back, they are closed. I understand they cater almost exclusively to the business crowd, but it would be nice to frequent them more often. I am also excited for more breakfast choices with Side Street.

        It really bums me out that I can never make their hours work for me either. I know I would love the place if I could ever catch them open!

        Cory -- Unrelated to this post, but just learned that the Barley Island in Broad Ripple closed? Any info on what may go into that space? Seems like prime real estate.

      • Contractors
        The contractor doing the renovations to this building is Western Waterproofing Co, Inc. Western also remodeled the PNC Plaza downtown in 2010 and finished that project in 2011. Western Waterproofing Co., Inc has been a local contractor to Indianapolis since 1973.

      1. "bike lanes, specialized lighting, decorative signage, public art, grass medians, trees and rain gardens" These are all nice things to have, but can we freaking get the hundreds of potholes all over the city fixed first?!?!?!!?!?!

When a criminal with multiple prior convictions serves five days of a one year sentence and later kills a police officer with a weapon illegally in his posession, residents of Boone County need to pay a tax to drive to work... PERFECT Progressive logic.. If, on the other hand, a fund were to be set up to build more prisons and hire more guards to keep the known criminals off the streets, I'd be the first to contribute.

      3. Not a word about how much the taxpayers will be ripped off on this deal. Crime spirals out of control and the the social problems that cause it go unheeded by an administration that does not give a rats behind about the welfare of our citizens. There is no money for police or plowing snow (remember last winter) or or or or, but spend on a sports complex, and the cash flows out of the taxpayers pockets. This city is SICK

      4. Sounds like a competitor just wanted to cause a problem. I would think as long as they are not "selling" the alcohol to the residents it is no different than if I serve wine to dinner guests. With all the violent crime happening I would think they should turn their attention to real criminals. Let these older residents enjoy what pleasures they can. Then again those boozed up residents may pose a danger to society.

      5. Where did the money go from the 2007 Income tax increase for public safety that the Mayor used to stir opposition and win the election and then failed to repeal (although he promised he would when he was running for election)? Where did the money go from the water utility sale? Where did the money go from the parking meter deal? Why does the money have all these funds for TIF deals and redevelopment of Mass avenue, and subsidy for luxury high rises, parking garages in Broad Ripple, and granola chain grocery stores but can not find the money to take care of public safety. Commuters shouldn't have to pay the tax of failed leadership in Marion County by leaders that commuters have no say in electing. Taxation without representation.
