compass-rose.jpgSeveral tasty nuggets today:
  • Iozzo's Garden of Italy is slated to open July 17 along Meridian Street just south of Shapiro's and Greek Islands, in the former home of Leland's and Cafe@Ray. The owner's grandfather in the 1940s owned an 800-seat restaurant of the same name where the Hyatt Regency now stands.

  • La Hacienda Mexican Restaurant plans to open a new location on Lawton Loop Drive near 56th Street and Post Road in Lawrence. The chain has restaurants along Lafayette Road on the west side, along Washington Street on the east side and off Binford Boulevard on the north side.
  • Tomo Japanese Steak House and Sushi Bar is slated to open later this month along Keystone Avenue north of 71st Street, in front of Wal-Mart.

  • Bert & Den's Grille & Chill has filed plans to open a 2,000-square-foot restaurant at Southern Plaza along U.S. 31 at I-465.

  • Bonjour Cafe & Bakery at 24th and Meridian streets has closed. It opened last August in front of the library services center.

    • That's a shame about Bonjour Cafe & Bakery, I imagine if we see more residential development along that corridor, places like those can survive better.
    • Poor timing -- I just tried to go to Bonjour on Saturday for the first time and they were closed. I thought that seemed odd but figured they might have been a M-F type of place. Too bad that they couldn't make it.
    • There is plenty of residential in Herron Morton, but Bonjour was overpriced, extremely slow, the selection of fresh-baked goods was lacking and the food was mediocre. I am sad to see another vacant building along this strip, but you have to produce a good product to succeed.
    • Bonjour: I went on multiple occasions, as I live around the corner. However, the food was just average, the price was high, and they never seemed organized at all. On one occasion, I ordered a pasta dish from the menu board for a child in our group i.e. mac & cheese or spagetti, and was then told they didn't have any. I pretty much gave up on them after that.

I think the location would be fine, just needs to be something with quick service at a reasonable price - or something less available - like a true bakery.
    • Any news on the Library Square development from Buckingham Properties?
    • You summed it up perfectly, Aaron. Bonjour was bland and overpriced. My wife and I live within walking distance and we really wanted to like it...we really did. But I am sorry to say that we made one visit and never went back.
    • Your roundup omits Cafe Zuppa, which opened at 320 N. Meridian earlier this month.
    • THERE IS NOT ENOUGH RESIDENTIAL DENSITY TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES LIKE THIS ON NORTH MERIDIAN!!! IT'S BASIC ECONOMICS!! PEOPLE DRIVE BY BUSINESSES IN THIS AREA......THEY DON'T LIVE HERE----YET!!! I GIVE IT 3-5 MORE YEARS.

    1. I had read earlier this spring that Noodles & Co was going to open in the Fishers Marketplace (which is SR 37 and 131st St, not 141st St, just FYI). Any word on that? Also, do you happen to know what is being built in Carmel at Pennsylvania and Old Meridian? May just be an office building but I'm not sure.

    2. I'm sorry, but you are flat out wrong. There are few tracks in the world with the history of IMS and probably NO OTHER as widely known and recognized. I don't care what you think about the stat of Indy Car racing, these are pretty hard things to dispute.

    3. Also wondering if there is an update on the Brockway Pub-Danny Boy restaurant/taproom that was planned for the village as well?

    4. Why does the majority get to trample on the rights of the minority? You do realize that banning gay marriage does not rid the world of gay people, right? They are still going to be around and they are still going to continue to exist. The best way to get it all out of the spotlight? LEGALIZE IT! If gay marriage is legal, they will get to stop trying to push for it and you will get to stop seeing it all over the news. Why do Christians get to decide what is moral?? Why do you get to push your religion on others? How would legalizing gay marriage expose their lifestyle to your children? By the way, their lifestyle is going to continue whether gay marriage is legalized or not. It's been legal in Canada for quite a while now and they seem to be doing just fine. What about actual rules handed down by God? What about not working on Sundays? What about obeying your parents? What about adultery? These are in the 10 Commandments, the most important of God's rules. Yet they are all perfectly legal. What about divorce? Only God is allowed to dissolve a marriage so why don't you work hard to get divorce banned? Why do you get to pick and choose the parts of the Bible you care about?

    5. Look at the bright side. With the new Lowe's call center, that means 1000 jobs at $10 bucks an hour. IMS has to be drooling over all that disposable income. If those employees can save all their extra money after bills, in five years they can go to the race LIVE. Can you say attendance boost?
