While on the road this weekend, my arts experience was limited to reading "The Best of Youth," the upcoming novel by Butler Univeristy writer-in-residence Michael Dahlie (more on that closer to its actual publication date). And since I'd already seen an IBJ Movie Night preview of "Lincoln," my first-choice movie experience was already covered.

So tell me what I missed in Central Indiana. Did you see the ISO's "West Side Story" concert? Get to Tonic Ball? Catch Victoria Clark at the Cabaret or the Lena Horne tribute at the Madame Walker? Expeirence the new Great American Songbook movie series at the Palladium? (Asking all of these questions is starting to make me wish I'd stayed home.)

What did you hear, see or do this weekend?

  • Billy Elliot
Can't say it was impressive.....they cut the ending that was used on Broadway from what i was later told, and overall was stalled the whole evening, I got he story line in the first 20 minutes....and it dragged the entire evening.
  • West Side Story at ISO
We caught the Friday night ISO performance of West Side Story. This is the second time we have seen ISO perform the musical score to accompany a popular movie. The symphony performed the music brilliantly down to every note and nuance. This being my mother's favorite movie of all time, I have grown up seeing it more times than I can count. If something wasn't right, we would know it. Unfortunately, something wasn't right with the audio track for the dialogue in the second half. It lasted only a few minutes during the bridal shop scene, then repeated briefly 3 more times during the remainder of the show. This would have been more disappointing had I not already had the dialogue memorized. At the end of the movie, the symphony played through the credits. This and the overture were the moments when you really could appreciate the fact that they were playing live because they disappeared into the background of the experience during the action on screen. Unfortunately, many audience members treated the performance like they were at a regular movie theater and walked out! This, I found incredibly rude. What is the rush? It's not like the extra 5 minutes to see the end of the performance is going to turn your carriage back into a pumpkin! If you are going to pay to see a performance, stick around. If you really must leave early, leave at intermission when walking in front of other patrons won't be disruptive. (P.S. can we make these recaptcha things easier to read?)

  4. The question is, where could they build a new stadium? It seems in the past year, all the prime spots have been spoken for with potential projects. Maybe in the industrial wasteland area a block past Lucas Oil? I think it needs to be close to the core, if a new stadium is built.

  5. Aldi is generally a great shopping experience. Still, I'm sure YOU wouldn't want to shop there, which I consider a positive.
