Aldi gets go-ahead to build store in Greenwood

Discount grocer Aldi has received the green light to combine three parcels of land in Greenwood to make way for the construction of a 16,000-square-foot grocery store.

aldi logo sign 225pxThe Greenwood Plan Commission on Monday approved Aldi’s request to combine two parcels with a third piece of land on Indiana 135 north of Smith Valley Road.

Aldi has purchased the land where a Pizza King restaurant and Dannemiller True Value store sit and will tear down the buildings to accommodate the new Aldi store, said Greenwood Planning Director Ed Ferguson. The third piece of land is located south of the hardware store.

It's uncertain when construction on the store might start, an Aldi spokeswoman said.

Aldi operates another grocery store and a distribution center in Greenwood, near U.S. 31 and Stop 18.

The German company operates 1,300 stores in 32 states. In December, it announced a plan to open 650 new stores nationwide within the next five years.

    You do realize that you are reading the INDIANAPOLIS business journal. I'm not sure what you were expecting? With creative and educated class staying away from this city and state in droves, you're not going to see many exciting development stories here.

      Tim, it looks like you are the only one bringing stereotypes into this conversation. The fact remains that certain retailers want to locate in areas with a certain demographic mix. Sorry that I pointed out the FACT that the southside doesn't have the demographics that Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and a whole host of other upscale retailers are looking for.

        Have you been to Center Grove? It's not out of the realm of possibility that the area would get a high end grocer someday. Unlikely at this time... But no need to be rude about it. Sorry.

        this blog has not been as exciting since cory left. theres a lot going on in town. it just seems like the homework required to keep this blog exciting has not been done
      • Changing Demographics
        The demographics of the Greenwood & Center Grove region are in transition. Examine the housing starts in Center Grove & one will find houses that are 4000 to 10000 sq.ft. Being built on 1 acre lots. The common vehicle being driven by Center Grove residents is a BMW or Acura. I go to the local Menards and see a Lamborghini in the parking lot occasionally. This region is changing. But it seems the bias & perceptions of some readers has not kept up with the changing demographics. I selected this area over the Carmel area to build my house & launch my business last year when I moved from Naperville, IL. It can support a Whole Foods Market & other perceived upscale merchants. Otherwise I would not be here today.

        As a reader previously pointed out, this is a blog about property and real estate. It can't concentrate solely on large upscale projects, and it strives to hit developments in all parts of the metropolitan area. Matt, please inform me about any projects that I might be missing. Thanks.

        Scott Olson, I think you're doing a fine job. Cory did a great job too, but in the latter years, sometimes Property Lines only would get three blog posts a month. I'd rather see regular posts--not all of which are riveting news--than three-week gaps between posts. Frequent updates are what keep a blog active with a big readership, even when the stories are sometimes dull. Besides, just a few days earlier, you posted some very promising news about great local restaurant development along and near Mass Ave. Keep up the good work. P.S. Trader Joe's IS Aldi.

        Fletcher, N.C.-based Earth Fare, which has stores in Carmel and Noblesville, filed plans this month to renovate 25,000 square feet formerly occupied by OfficeMax at 2110 E. County Line Road on the city’s south side. Also on the south side, Phoenix-based startup Fresh Thyme Farmers Market said last month that it plans to rehab 30,000 square feet of space vacated by The Room Place at 8750 U.S. 31. Brokers say Fresh Thyme is also targeting space at 4225 E. 82nd St. near Keystone at the Crossing formerly occupied by a Lifestyle Family Fitness. Both of these sound similar to Trader Joes and they chose the Southside!!

      1. I had read earlier this spring that Noodles & Co was going to open in the Fishers Marketplace (which is SR 37 and 131st St, not 141st St, just FYI). Any word on that? Also, do you happen to know what is being built in Carmel at Pennsylvania and Old Meridian? May just be an office building but I'm not sure.

      2. I'm sorry, but you are flat out wrong. There are few tracks in the world with the history of IMS and probably NO OTHER as widely known and recognized. I don't care what you think about the stat of Indy Car racing, these are pretty hard things to dispute.

      4. Why does the majority get to trample on the rights of the minority? You do realize that banning gay marriage does not rid the world of gay people, right? They are still going to be around and they are still going to continue to exist. The best way to get it all out of the spotlight? LEGALIZE IT! If gay marriage is legal, they will get to stop trying to push for it and you will get to stop seeing it all over the news. Why do Christians get to decide what is moral?? Why do you get to push your religion on others? How would legalizing gay marriage expose their lifestyle to your children? By the way, their lifestyle is going to continue whether gay marriage is legalized or not. It's been legal in Canada for quite a while now and they seem to be doing just fine. What about actual rules handed down by God? What about not working on Sundays? What about obeying your parents? What about adultery? These are in the 10 Commandments, the most important of God's rules. Yet they are all perfectly legal. What about divorce? Only God is allowed to dissolve a marriage so why don't you work hard to get divorce banned? Why do you get to pick and choose the parts of the Bible you care about?

      5. Look at the bright side. With the new Lowe's call center, that means 1000 jobs at $10 bucks an hour. IMS has to be drooling over all that disposable income. If those employees can save all their extra money after bills, in five years they can go to the race LIVE. Can you say attendance boost?
