Notre Dame boosting college football ticket market, IU dragging it down

When it comes to getting into college football games, not many places are more expensive than Notre Dame. Indiana University is just the opposite, but more on that in a minute.

Only tickets to see Ohio State play are more expensive than Notre Dame in the secondary market, according to ticket brokerage Vivid Seats.

The average and median ticket prices to see the Fighting Irish play at South Bend are $260 and $210, respectively. Ohio State’s average and median are $299 and $211.

Several other traditional college football powers are near the top. Alabama is third with $247 and $200, and Georgia is fourth at $234 and $200, according to Vivid Seats.

There’s a big drop off at No. 5, with Louisiana State home games going for $192 and $133. UCLA is sixth at $177, but with a fifth-highest median at $140.

Rounding out the top 10 are Nebraska ($165/$140), Oklahoma ($150/$134), Texas A&M ($177/$127) and Oregon ($154/$132).

Oddly, last year’s national champion, Florida State, did not make the top 25.

Besides Ohio State and Nebraska, the Big Ten has three other schools in the top 25. Iowa is No. 13 ($145/$120), Penn State is No. 14 ($141/$115) and Michigan State is No. 25 ($124/$88).

What about Indiana University football? The Hoosiers are nowhere on the list when it comes to expensive football tickets. In fact, IU depresses the market wherever it goes.

When IU comes to town, home ticket prices of their opponents decrease an average of 14.6 percent on the secondary market compared to what they would sell for during all other home games, according to Vivid Seats.

Ohio State drives its road opponent ticket prices up 134.6 percent and Michigan, up 123.6 percent. Nine of 14 Big Ten schools have a positive effect on the secondary ticket prices of their road opponents home games. Purdue is No. 9 with a 2.8-percent positive impact when on the road.

IU is No. 13 in the Big Ten, ahead of only Rutgers, which depresses its road opponents tickets by a whopping 24.5 percent.

Notre Dame seems to have a positive impact on ticket prices no matter where it plays.

The Fighting Irish is involved in four games in the top 25 in terms of ticket prices on the secondary market. And clearly there are lots of ND (and Purdue) fans in Indianapolis.

The Notre Dame vs. Purdue game at Lucas Oil Stadium is the seventh most-expensive college football game to get a ticket to on the secondary market. The average is $337 and the median in $342.

It will be even more expensive for Notre Dame fans to get a ticket on the secondary market for the team’s home game against Michigan on Sept. 6. That is the fourth most expensive—$492 average and $465 median.

Notre Dame has two other road games in the top 25. At USC is No. 18 at $267 and Navy is No. 25 at $243.

The Nov. 29 Michigan at Ohio State game, at an eye-popping $656, is the most expensive of all. The Nov. 8 Alabama at LSU game is the second most expensive at $561.

Who cares?????? Use that $$ to help a real charity
    • Such insight!
You mean to tell me that programs that are more historically succesful attract more interest? Who knew????
    • Exactly Right
Reddog is right. And no doubt a large percentage of the people who pay these outlandish prices to attend football games also are the loudest voices claiming that they can't afford any tax increases to pay for better schools, better public health programs, or more public safety folks like police and firefighters. We have to keep cutting taxes and public services so these folks will have more to spend on sporting events and drive the price of these tickets higher and higher.
      • Interesting
It is interesting that FSU is not in the top 25. Thanks for the AS.
      • Prices
Herein is the major problem with college sports. The cost of attending these events is absolutely outrageous. I understand the supply and demand for college sports... but really?
      • A wide paint brush?
TP _ really? please provide your research which would validate your very tall tale........
      • good story
Very interesting story. Looking forward to going on an IU road game or two! :)
      • ND tickets
Thinking Prof and Reddog I guess my question is how much did you contribute to any of the causes that you feel so strongly about and do you know any of the people willing to spend money to enjoy their sporting event ? You do not know me (thank goodness) but I am very proud to say that I own season tickets to various sports franchises in the Indianapolis area I will be attending the Purdue vs Notre Dame game with 18 friends (no I did not attend either University) AND I certainly pay for and donate to multiple events that NEED support. If you choose not to spend money on sporting events that is YOUR choice not to attend. Please mention to me what you have done lately to better the daily life of just one school teacher, fireman or law enforcement officer. I can !!
      • liberals attack as usual
always those 'progressives' who like to tell others what to do with their money. i'd guess its likely they aren't the ones donating to charities eithers. the real issue is that we don't have a tax dollars problem. we have a waste problem. this is completely off subject, but the libs started it. its a shame that higher taxes don't lead to better schools, better police, better roads, etc, but you leave the gov in charge of spending others money and all it leads to is waste, fraud, and corruption. i'll gladly buy a ticket to a college football game over giving it to gov. BTW, if you libs feel inclined, you are given the option on tax forms to 'donate' more than the required. put your money where your mouth is and stop telling others how to spend their hard earned money. its always the ones not paying taxes that want to increase the taxes of others.

One more reason to ponder.....does IU football really belong in the Big 10? Or should they be division II?

Bravo!_____NBCSN is available in almost 2 MILLION more homes than just a few years ago, but Indycar STILL gets less total viewers than it did just a few years ago when NBC took over Versus. Attendance and ratings cratered with the end of season races (just when the title battle got "interesting" HAH!__________And now...new race in Basilia, where Miles celebrated the "rich history" of Indycar racing there. 5. Problem: most of the people responding to this article don't know about this service AT ALL! Why? Lack of awareness. This isn't IndyGo. This is CIRTA: might as well be the mattress company because they are asleep at the wheel - something like 3 directors over the last year? Playing with federal grant money is great! This "region" wants commuter rail service, has spent MILLIONS on Transportation studies yet can't even support a commuter bus line? This is largely for suburban riders to get to downtown - not for "service people to work in our hotels and restaurants" ! Get your head out of your backside!! These are professionals, students etc. that don't want to fight traffic, save some money on parking, gas, stress.... if CIRTA would put their federal money into widely promoting the sevive to Greenwood, Fishers & Carmel instead of finding directors and studies - this would be a successful service. Our family uses(d) it daily for the last several years - but the recent uncertainty & now unreliability due to cuts from Carmel has been a problem. Now, costs us an additional $350/month for gas & parking ( $4200/year) plus vehicle wear, service, environmental impact ... YES - this REGION needs this this type of service in order to keep growing and getting the people it needs to fill skilled positions in downtown Indianapolis. Think outside of your own car !!!
