Radio vet launches Indy's third local afternoon sports show

Then there were three.

With the addition of Kent Sterling as host of CBS Sports Radio’s afternoon show at WXNT-AM 1430, there are now three local sports-talk shows on during afternoon drive time in Indianapolis.

Sterling, who replaced the nationally syndicated Doug Gottlieb Show, will face The Drive with JMV on WFNI-AM 1070 and the Query and Schultz Show on WNDE-AM 1260.

The competition for Sterling will be stiff. The show hosted by John Gliva—better known as JMV—is the runaway sports-talk ratings leader during the afternoon drive-time slot, and Query and Schultz have built a growing following among listeners and advertisers.

WXNT launched The Kent Sterling Show with little fanfare June 16. Now that the show has found its voice, Sterling said a marketing campaign including social media, press releases and on-site broadcasts at the Tilted Kilt downtown will kick off in the coming weeks.

“Driving traffic to a show that wasn’t necessarily ready, I mean we didn’t know what it was going to sound like, wasn’t very appealing to me,” Sterling said. “Now we’ve better determined what the show is going to be. We’re getting great guests and great content.”

Sterling’s show has already nabbed its first major local sponsor, Today’s Dentistry in Fishers, and he is confident the show’s stable of corporate partners will grow this fall.

On Jan. 2, 2013, WXNT benched its news-talk lineup featuring Glenn Beck, Dennis Miller and Michael Smerconish and became a CBS Sports radio affiliate. But until Sterling joined WXNT and began broadcasting his show on weekdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., the station owned by Entercom Communications Corp. had an all-syndicated line-up.

Sterling, 50, is no stranger to the local market. He has resided in Indianapolis most of his life, graduating from Indiana University with a journalism degree in 1986.

For nearly 17 years, he worked for Emmis Communication Corp.’s Indianapolis radio cluster, helping launch WFNI, better known as 1070 The Fan, in 2007.

After a management change at Emmis in early 2010, Sterling was shown the door. After a two-year stint working in sports-talk for Hubbard Broadcasting in St. Louis, he returned to Indianapolis.

Until now, Sterling has primarily worked in radio management. He said he’s more than ready to leave management for an on-air job.

“I’ve always wanted to be on-air, but somehow got pushed into management,” said Sterling, who spent the early 1990s as an on-stage performer for The Second City in Chicago. “You can only sit in so many meetings where increasing efficiencies are talked about and derive joy from it.”

So how will Sterling differentiate his show in the crowded market place?

“We talk about sports and nothing but sports,” Sterling explained. “The [market’s] other [sports-talk] shows during that time slot are all over the place. I think there’s an opening we can exploit.”

There’s been much discussion about the market’s demand for three sports-talk stations. In December, 2007, 1070 The Fan joined WNDE and WXLW-AM 950 as the market’s third sports-talk station.

A battle ensued, with The Fan swiping the ESPN Radio affiliation from WXLW and eventually JMV from WNDE. Derek Schultz left WXLW to join forces with Jake Query at WNDE. WXLW eventually abandoned the sports-talk format for political talk in September 2012.

WXNT jumped into sports less than four months after WXLW left the arena, but has struggled to gain a strong local audience with little local content. Sterling is confident his show can gain a solid footing here.

“I don’t know if this market is big enough for three sports-talk stations,” he said. “But it’s big enough for this station to survive. We are well-positioned in sports. I think this show can build an audience quickly in a market that is not served by a show that just talks about sports in this [afternoon drive-time timeslot.]”

Sterling will continue to produce his web site covering topics involving the media and sports, but said his primary focus will be his new radio show.

“I get up in the morning thinking about this radio show and I go to bed at night thinking about this radio show,” Sterling said. “I’m driven to do whatever it takes to make it a success.”

  • Good luck
    My best always! Dave Wilson
    • Diluted?
Kent definitely has talent and he may even "win" the afternoon drive time competition, but do we really need 3 local sports talk shows? Can't we get just one show with a national presence?!? I loved Doug Gottlieb in that slot and have now switched back to music. How many times can we talk about Hibbert's implosion or Reggie Wayne's knee?? All these guys know national sports, but it always seem to pull right back to Indiana sports (x3).
    • Good
It will be nice to hear someone actually talk about sports. All JMV and Query/Schultz do is talk about themselves, and I hate to tell them but they are not very interesting. I put it on 1070 or 1260 for about 2 minutes and I can't take it anymore.
    • smart show
Kent's done a good job of putting together some good guests, intelligence and irreverence without the inane chatter of the other two shows. JMV is unlistenable, mostly because he doesn't do his homework and depends on non-sports stuff to keep HIM interested. Query and Shultz is a bit better, but lack of prep in their show certainly is evident. Sterling obviously workes harder than the other shows. We shall see if there is any way for a third signal with very little successful recent history to make it. I always say you have to give a show two years to grow into what it will become...
    • Another Option
Big fan of Query & Schultz but I'm really interested to hear what Will Carroll will do with a national audience.
    • Kent
Kent used to be my boss. He treated me fairly, kept me in line when needed. I wish him well. Hosting your own show is wonderful.
    • Changing to Sterling
I have listened gradually more and more to Kent's show, and less and less to JMV, in the last month. WNDE doesn't reach down to Bloomington clearly, so Derek and Jake aren't a good option for me. Sterling simply has more sports, more guests and seems interested in what he is doing. As mentioned by someone else, JMV does seem bored.
    • Sterling
I am still a big JMV fan, but Kent is also interesting and does a great job. When I need a change of pace I will definitely choose Sterling over 1260...not a fan of that show at all.
    • miss Dave Wilson
Of all the people who we've lost over the airwaves I miss Dave Wilson the most; whether it was the hysterically silly "Ax the King" or talking about the Speedway and other sports. A truly wonderful one of a kind personality.
    • In the minority...
I'm apparently in the minority, but I don't enjoy Sterling's new show. For only spending two years there, he seems overly eager to talk about St. Louis sports teams. I try to listen from time to time, but always change the channel at the first mention of anything related to St. Louis --or when he frequently attempts his own impression of Harry Caray. It never takes long for him to do either one...

    5. Problem: most of the people responding to this article don't know about this service AT ALL! Why? Lack of awareness. This isn't IndyGo. This is CIRTA: might as well be the mattress company because they are asleep at the wheel - something like 3 directors over the last year? Playing with federal grant money is great! This "region" wants commuter rail service, has spent MILLIONS on Transportation studies yet can't even support a commuter bus line? This is largely for suburban riders to get to downtown - not for "service people to work in our hotels and restaurants" ! Get your head out of your backside!! These are professionals, students etc. that don't want to fight traffic, save some money on parking, gas, stress.... if CIRTA would put their federal money into widely promoting the sevive to Greenwood, Fishers & Carmel instead of finding directors and studies - this would be a successful service. Our family uses(d) it daily for the last several years - but the recent uncertainty & now unreliability due to cuts from Carmel has been a problem. Now, costs us an additional $350/month for gas & parking ( $4200/year) plus vehicle wear, service, environmental impact ... YES - this REGION needs this this type of service in order to keep growing and getting the people it needs to fill skilled positions in downtown Indianapolis. Think outside of your own car !!!
