The folks at the Indianapolis Museum of Art have named names (at least some) for programming at its soon-to-be-opening  Tobias Theatre.

The initial schedule for this new "living room" for the arts includes:

--"Virtuosos and Visions," featuring violinist Cho-Liang Lin, pipa artist Min Xiao-Fen, and a performance of the genre-bending "Ghost Opera." The concert will serve as the opener for the venue on Nov. 21. (Okay, you can ask: a pipa is short-necked fretted lute. Please don't ever be shy about asking.)

--Noted chef and restaurant owner Alice Waters speaking on Dec. 2 on the subject of "Slow Food" (as opposed to fast food).

--Winter Nights movie screenings, echoing the popular outdoor Summer Nights series of mainstream film and classics. The Friday night flickers will run through January and February.

--One-Two Punch movie screenings, in which two somehow-related films will be paired. These will be featured the last Saturday of each month, beginning in November.

More announcements to come.

  • That sounds exciting! Can't wait to see what else they do with it!
  • Can't wait especially to hear Alice Waters. I'm really impressed with the direction the IMA is taking.
  • Although the IMA press release didn't mention specific films, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra does have the following very exciting program on its schedule:

    February 20, 2009
    7:30 PM
Tobias Theatre at the Indianapolis Museum of Art
    Buster Keaton's The General
A silent film screening with live orchestral accompaniment.

    --Lou Harry
  • The Tobias Theater's opening concert is a collabative venture between the Int'l Violin Competition of Indianapolis and the IMA. Cho-Liang Lin has been a jury member for three of our Competitions and 2002 Laureate Susie park will also be performing at the concert on Nov. 21. This concert is part of our 2008-2009 Laureate Series. Many more details to come!
