BSU QB catches Colts' Polian's eye

bsuqbDoes Bill Polian’s attendance at Ball State’s home football game Wednesday night mean the Indianapolis Colts are quarterback shopping? League sources and draft experts said the notion shouldn’t be discounted, although Colts Coach Tony Dungy told IBJ recently he thought Peyton Manning, 32, has at least five good years in the tank. That surgically repaired knee might have team officials thinking twice about that. Or the Colts might merely be thinking of looking to their long-term future.

Polian told the ESPN2 crew covering Ball State’s game he couldn’t comment too much on Ball State QB Nate Davis, 21, due to NFL regulations, but added that he liked what he saw from the Ohio native.

Letting Davis, who is a junior but is said to be considering coming out early, learn for three or four years behind Manning would be like sending him to graduate school in NFL quarterbacking. One thing is clear. Colts back up QB Jim Sorgi has no future as a starter in Indianapolis, a fact Dungy acknowledged to a roomful of local business executives at a recent IBJ Power Breakfast.

Ball State is currently rated No. 17 nationally, and Davis on Wednesday steamrolled Northern Illinois, the Mid-American Conference’s No. 1 defense. History has shown it would be a mistake for NFL scouts to ignore MAC quarterbacks. Guys like Ben Roethlisberger, Chad Pennington, Byron Leftwich, Charlie Frye and Bruce Gradkowski have parlayed their MAC success to NFL careers. Polian said he is not deterred from drafting skilled position players from smaller conferences.

Some scouts said Davis, at 6-2, 217 pounds, is a tad small for a prototypical NFL quarterback. But his size certainly hasn’t hindered him at Ball State, where he owns numerous school records. And he stood especially tall Wednesday night, completing 18 for 22 passes, for 300 yards and four touchdowns. You have to believe Polian took notice.

  • Davis is the best pro-prospect in the country, right now. No disclaimers, no excuses.
  • Pollian is always looking. Although Dungy acknowledged Sorgi would not be the starter, of course if Peyton would have the unlikely ingury, he would be the starter. i think Dungy was referring to an inherited role to Manning would not be Sorgi's. Davis could definately be on the radar screen for the Colts. It's liekly Peyton will be here at least 3 more years. Sorgi will likely be here for at least one more. But Davis could come out early and take that spot earlier.

  1. Lauren: I reported BJ's plans based on their filing for construction permits. Of course, it's possible the plans fell through. Will update if I can find out more.

  2. This weekend the Indianapolis School of Ballet performed Russian Treasures at the Scottish Rite Cathedral Theater for huge, enthusiastic crowds. This group of young people, returning students and young guest artists did fantastic performances of Balanchine's Valse-Fantaisie, Swan Lake Act II, Raymonda Act III and Allegro Vivace. I was blown away by the professionalism and energy of this school, which is on the caliber with most professional companies. If you're looking for great dancing and production value, this downtown venue is worth seeing and supporting.

  3. Are they indeed going up there? I was told by BJ's directly they had no new stores planned in the area...

  4. The article mentions that Indiana casinos are losing revenue to Ohio and Illinois casinos, but neglects to mention that those regional competitors are smoke-free for worker health.

In other words, Indiana's smoke-filled casinos are losing revenue to smoke-free competitors - without a local or statewide clean air law in Indiana to blame for it. Meanwhile, Indiana's casino workers, in order to provide for their family in a tough economy, must face the health hazards of secondhand smoke on a daily basis including cancer, heart disease, COPD, and many other preventable diseases, and associated healthcare costs.

Indiana lawmakers should take a cue from states like Ohio, Illinois, Maryland, and Massachusetts and ensure that casino jobs don't sicken the very people those jobs are intended to help. Even sophisticated casino ventilation systems do not protect people from the serious health hazards of secondhand smoke.

  5. Some bump day, huh? Why were Loyd and Hamilton not allowed to run? Both say they had rides. It must be all part of the Vision. The good news is no traffic and plenty of room to stretch out. It would be nice if someone picked up some trash, there was so much trash in the Paddock Penthouse yesterday it looked like a Hulman George family reunion.
