About This Section

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. One in every three deaths is from heart disease and stroke, equal to 2,200 deaths per day.

"Heart disease takes the lives of far too many people in this country, depriving their families and communities of someone they love and care for—a father, a mother, a wife, a friend, a neighbor, a spouse. With more than 2 million heart attacks and strokes a year, and 800,000 deaths, just about all of us have been touched by someone who has had heart disease, heart attack, or a stroke."

-US Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius

Even though these are staggering numbers, heart disease and mortality has been decreasing steadily over the past three decades. There are various conditions, such as the obesity epidemic, that threaten this progress, but overall we are headed in the right direction when it comes to cardiac health.

I think most would agree the need for top quality heart disease prevention and management is great. This second edition of IBJ’s Executive Health Series: Cardiac Care, a promotional supplement, examines advances, innovations and trends in heart care. Fortunately for us, some of the best and most advanced cardiac care in the country is located right here in the Indianapolis region. Patients come here from all over the nation, really the world, to receive the best heart care available.

This year we look at advancements in technology and care, such as non-invasive aortic valve replacement, and at the economics of treating congestive heart failure. Additionally, you’ll find profiles of many local health care institutions that are “best in class” in the battle to fight and help prevent heart disease.

I trust this new supplement will help educate and inform our readers about advances in heart disease management and prevention. Look for more Executive Health Series publications to come later this year and in 2014. Thanks for reading IBJ.
