Customer service firm plans to hire 1,000 workers

Interactions Corp. plans to add 1,000 new employees to its local workforce by 2015, focusing mainly on customer service and data entry functions.

Based in Boston, Interactions provides automated systems for customer care with a conversational tone. The systems are run from so-called “iCenters,” the largest of which is in Indianapolis at 2525 Shadeland Ave.

Called “intent analysts,” the 1,000 new full-time and part-time employees will work at that facility, said Dan Fox, a marketing manager for Interactions Corp. The iCenter currently employs several hundred workers, Fox said.

The new jobs will pay within a range of $12 to $18 per hour, Fox said, based on the productivity, speed and accuracy of the individual employee.

Interactions employees do not communicate directly with a client’s customers, but rather monitor the calls to best determine the customer’s intent and where he or she should be directed.

The firm plans to begin hiring immediately. It also runs iCenters in Franklin, Massachusetts, and Austin, Texas. Interactions also announced on Wednesday the addition of 1,000 jobs at the latter location.

"Indianapolis is an extremely inviting climate to grow a business," said CEO Mike Iacobucci in a prepared statement. "We're thrilled to be giving back to the community by creating an abundance of opportunities for its members."

  • Dear HoosierLib
Someone who is unemployed will still be happy to take a job that makes $10-12 hour. Is it ideal? No. Is it a step in the right direction? Absolutely. Sometimes people need the boost of pride that just having a job can bring. Will it solve the living wage crisis? No. It will however give people an opportunity to demonstrate that they can add value to the workforce.
  • Interactions moved to Boston in 2009
Boston.com has an article from 2010 where they talk about how Interactions moved to Massachusetts in the year prior. http://www.boston.com/business/technology/innoeco/2010/07/interactions_banks_63_million.html The article includes a link back to that Inside Indiana Business press release I linked to earlier, snarkily noting, "Guess this 2006 plan to create 200-plus new jobs in Indiana didn't exactly work out."
  • Dear Citizen
And there enlies the problem. Our state does a horrible job of retaining the talent that they create (i.e. beaindrain). The $18,000 a year you cite is now the equivalent of $28,500 a year. None of jobs this company is creating will pay a wage above the poverty rate. We as taxpayers, are subsidizing corporate profits by allowing companies to pay less than a living wages and forcing workers to survive on government and charitable handouts. Hopefully low wage earning Republicans will wake up to this reality...
    • on the Ellen's remark about hightailing
In the case of Interactions, when they were in Carmel, that was quite true. The director of R&D who was there from 2006 - 2008 has since moved to Seattle and has worked on several high profile projects at Amazon.
    • Snarky bunch
You people are a snarky bunch aren't you? So what is there low paying jobs? People that need a job will gladly taken them to help get some experience under their belt. I could not get a job after college in 1995 paying more than 18,000 and that was with a BS in Accounting. I had no experience so no one wanted me. Any experience in the workforce is better than sitting at home and drawing welfare.
    • Computer programmers/engineers
Kevin, there are plenty of Computer programmers/engineers that are graduating from Purdue, Rose Hulman, IU, etc. The thing is though, is that they hightail it out of Indiana once they get their degree due to the quality of life in Indiana. Indiana's MO is more focused on improving the lives of corporations (yes, they are people now) than the lives of its human citizens.
    • Interactions has been here before
It should be worth noting that Interactions Corp was lured to relocate from New Jersey to Carmel in 2006 and actually had developers located up at its offices at Clay Terrace at one time. About eight years ago, they were trumpeting the move and a promise to hire 240 jobs over the next three years. https://www.insideindianabusiness.com/newsitem.asp?ID=19617 I'm not sure when they pulled up the stakes to move to Boston or whether they collected on all of the goodies that the IEDC and Carmel offered them.
      • Jobs that fit the skill level
The reason these employers are attracted to Indiana is becasue of the present skill level of the Indiana work force. Let's be honest- we dont have an overabundance of Computer programmers/engineers, etc. looking for work. These jobs are perfect for those looking for part time or entry level work. You cant provide high paying jobs to low skilled workers- supply and demand.
      • Hey Ellen!
There is only room for one snarky socialist to make comments on the IBJ...lol. You beat me to the punch and you are spot on. Let's get excited about jobs that pay $24,960 a year!
      • customer service
Oh boy! More low-paying customer service jobs for Indiana!! "Indianapolis is an extremely inviting climate to grow a business..." should be "Indianapolis is an extremely inviting climate to hire low wage, unskilled workers..."

      5. Problem: most of the people responding to this article don't know about this service AT ALL! Why? Lack of awareness. This isn't IndyGo. This is CIRTA: might as well be the mattress company because they are asleep at the wheel - something like 3 directors over the last year? Playing with federal grant money is great! This "region" wants commuter rail service, has spent MILLIONS on Transportation studies yet can't even support a commuter bus line? This is largely for suburban riders to get to downtown - not for "service people to work in our hotels and restaurants" ! Get your head out of your backside!! These are professionals, students etc. that don't want to fight traffic, save some money on parking, gas, stress.... if CIRTA would put their federal money into widely promoting the sevive to Greenwood, Fishers & Carmel instead of finding directors and studies - this would be a successful service. Our family uses(d) it daily for the last several years - but the recent uncertainty & now unreliability due to cuts from Carmel has been a problem. Now, costs us an additional $350/month for gas & parking ( $4200/year) plus vehicle wear, service, environmental impact ... YES - this REGION needs this this type of service in order to keep growing and getting the people it needs to fill skilled positions in downtown Indianapolis. Think outside of your own car !!!
