UPDATE: Fatal accident wreaks havoc on north-side traffic

Two construction workers removing traffic cones after overnight paving were killed Friday morning when a pickup truck crashed into them along Interstate 69 in northeast Indianapolis, police said.

The crash happened about 5:45 a.m. in the southbound lanes a couple miles north of I-465, causing traffic heading into Indianapolis to back up for several miles in the heavily traveled suburban area.

Traffic had thinned to near-normal conditions by late morning.

State Police Sgt. Rich Myers said investigators didn't immediately know why the driver of the pickup ran into the large arrow board set up in the left lanes of the highway or how fast the truck was going at the time.

The two people killed, who worked for a contractor, were standing along the road and about to move the arrow board after crews had moved cones marking off the paving area, Myers said.

"They were essentially done and had backed up to the arrow board with another truck, had it hooked up and were standing along the right-hand side when they were struck," he said.

Indiana State Police identified the men as 49-year-old Kenneth Duerson Jr. of Indianapolis and 24-year-old Coty Demoss of Noblesville, WISH-TV reported. They worked for Rieth-Riley Construction and were two minutes from the end of their shift.

The 22-year-old man driving the pickup was stuck inside the vehicle because of the damage. He was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, Myers said. No charges were immediately filed from the crash.

Sgt. Rich Myers from Indiana State Police identified the driver as Jordan Stafford, 22, of Fortville, Fox59 reported. Myers said Stafford was pinned inside his truck and couldn’t get out. Crews had to extricate him from the pickup truck. He was taken to an area hospital for what Myers described as minor injuries.

The Indiana Department of Transportation will conduct a joint investigation with the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration to determine whether proper safety procedures were followed, highway agency spokesman Nathan Riggs said.

Such crashes show the dangers of highway construction areas, Riggs said.

"So many things can happen suddenly in a work zone, it's imperative that you just pay attention," he said. "Look at the signs, slow down and make sure you have enough room, especially with the vehicle in front of you."

  • The costs
These are the costs to out continued addiction to our cars...
  • ASSumption
Way to make an assumption without an ounce of actual fact. First, it was very early. Being sleepy might have played role. The crew was taking down the arrows, so maybe he didn't see them. Maybe you're right and the cell phone played a part. its just stupid to assume something when you know nothing. Second, texting or using a cell phone while driving is not limited to an under 30 problem. I've seen plenty of old Whatever the cause, prayers go out to those that lost in this accident.
  • Don't know why he failed to change lanes?
Come on. We all know why. You don't slam into a nearly stationary vehicle in front of you without seeing it if you are watching the road. He's 22. Like all <30 kids he can't pry his face off his phone for more than 10 seconds at a time. He had his eyeballs stuck on his phone...likely texting.

  1. Uh, sorry Johnnie, but you are incorrect. Despite the assertions by yourself and various defenders and captains, sports attendance is NOT off significantly at most sporting events in the US. Variances in attendance has been in the range of single digits, both + & - for years now. MLB has had most of its best overall attendance nubers in the last decade, and that trend has been consistent for most major sporting events. The number one issue cited by most fans when asked about attendance is the overall cost of attending. The presence of HD and big screen televisions in home doesn't even register, as a factor for not attending an event. VALUE in the product is the key, and apparently is something lacking in the current ICS. What other explanation is there when with what is routinely touted as the "best" racing on the planet, fans are staying away in DROVES. A "close" title battle into the last event at Fontana, with the "cars and stars" of the ICS, and who showed up? MAYBE 8K. Sorry, but HD TV isn't to blame for that kind of fan apathy.

  3. If she was worth the $ the public outcry over direct tv dropping them would have kept them on their dishes as we have seen with other companies. I too quit watching channel 13 after she showed up since I left channel 8 because of her all show rather than production results. When Randy on 8 corrected her she had a big head and incorrectly challenged his correction for pronunciation of a city. Other antics while she matures was too much for me with her very inaccurate forecasts. All the forecasters were predicting rain until Thursday except Chris. They predicted sunny on Thursday but instead of rain until Thursday upon which the sun would finally make it out in full glory Chris was right on the money just as I too predicted looking at the radar on weather.gov. One thing I love about Angela is the fear you can see in her every time it thunders in the winter. It far exceeds the entertainment value of her body language (high heel noise drags, depression, etc) when her forecasts are so incorrect. Her hair stands on end, you have to see it!!!
