In 2010, Dr. Richard “Ben” Rodgers became certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. That makes it sound like Rodgers is new to his field, but he actually already has racked up a host of accomplishments: assistant professor of neurological surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine; neurosurgeon with Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine (a merger of Indianapolis Neurosurgical Group and Indiana University’s Department of Neurological Surgery); and chief of surgery at Indiana University Health West Hospital.

Rodgers was part of the team that saved the life of Jason Fishburn, the Indianapolis police officer shot in the head by a fleeing forgery suspect in 2008.

If you think his achievements are impressive, consider this: He’s the first person in his family to attend college.

“The neurosurgery board exam is a little different from other specialties in that you have to be in practice for several years before you build up enough cases to submit to the board for your board exams,” he said.

Rodgers graduated from the IU School of Medicine and moved into the neurosurgery program in Indianapolis after that. He trained in Indianapolis and completed a fellowship in Miami, then returned to IU as a faculty neurosurgeon whose job was to train residents and take care of patients. He’s been in that position for more than five years.

Rodgers considers himself a resident educator rather than a private-practice neurosurgeon. His job as assistant professor is to help organize resident lectures and the direct, didactic teaching part of what they learn.

In his off-hours, Rodgers plays softball at the Midwest Softball Complex and has for 11 years with the same group of guys. You’d think there would be restrictions on his extracurricular activities—after all, he broke his leg playing ball last year—but no.

“I don’t think I’m allowed to jump out of an airplane,” he said, adding that he’s no longer interested in that pursuit. “I’d rather scuba dive now. That’s something I’d like to learn how to do that I haven’t done.”•

  • Outstanding Doctor
Just seen Dr. "Ben" Rogers today!! He completed an so joint fusion on me that helped my pain great for about a year.... Not his fault that I'm young and a former gymnast and diver for Ball State. :( the key is todY when I seen him he was and is INVESTIGATING he didn't immediately jump into that I needed surgery! Even though I had a ct scan ( can't have MRI due to neuro stimulator ) that said there wasn't a fusion and that three screws were moving!! He is contacting the company that created the procedure I had done to c if this has ever happened before and if so what did the surgeons do??? He is the absolute best n the field!! I have also seen many of the doctors at Goodman Cambell Brain ( fusion at c5 and c6 and then C6 C 7 dr. Eric Potts and dr Darren Wilson for pain management) Spine and they are an ELITE group of doctors!! I have to thank God for them treating me every dAy!!!

  1. Uh, sorry Johnnie, but you are incorrect. Despite the assertions by yourself and various defenders and captains, sports attendance is NOT off significantly at most sporting events in the US. Variances in attendance has been in the range of single digits, both + & - for years now. MLB has had most of its best overall attendance nubers in the last decade, and that trend has been consistent for most major sporting events. The number one issue cited by most fans when asked about attendance is the overall cost of attending. The presence of HD and big screen televisions in home doesn't even register, as a factor for not attending an event. VALUE in the product is the key, and apparently is something lacking in the current ICS. What other explanation is there when with what is routinely touted as the "best" racing on the planet, fans are staying away in DROVES. A "close" title battle into the last event at Fontana, with the "cars and stars" of the ICS, and who showed up? MAYBE 8K. Sorry, but HD TV isn't to blame for that kind of fan apathy.

  3. If she was worth the $ the public outcry over direct tv dropping them would have kept them on their dishes as we have seen with other companies. I too quit watching channel 13 after she showed up since I left channel 8 because of her all show rather than production results. When Randy on 8 corrected her she had a big head and incorrectly challenged his correction for pronunciation of a city. Other antics while she matures was too much for me with her very inaccurate forecasts. All the forecasters were predicting rain until Thursday except Chris. They predicted sunny on Thursday but instead of rain until Thursday upon which the sun would finally make it out in full glory Chris was right on the money just as I too predicted looking at the radar on weather.gov. One thing I love about Angela is the fear you can see in her every time it thunders in the winter. It far exceeds the entertainment value of her body language (high heel noise drags, depression, etc) when her forecasts are so incorrect. Her hair stands on end, you have to see it!!!
