Interactive Intelligence Inc. reported higher profit in the second quarter compared to the same period the previous year, as revenue for its business-communications software products and services increased.

The Indianapolis-based provider of call-center software said on Tuesday that second-quarter profit rose to $2.5 million, or 13 cents per share, a 17-percent improvement over the same three months of 2009.

Second quarter revenue climbed 18 percent over the year-ago period, to $38.8 million.

“We again experienced an increase in the dollar amount of orders from last year, which is what drives the growth in our revenues,” Interactive Intelligence founder and CEO Donald E. Brown said in a prepared statement.

Interactive Intelligence also reported strong profit gains in the first six months of the year. It earned $4.3 million, a 30-percent improvement over the same period in 2009, on revenue of $73.8 million.
