IRL focus of Bush report, TV ad

ethanolThe Indy Racing League made Pres. George W. Bush’s final report, highlighting his eight-year term’s accomplishments and results. On page 26 of the report, Bush writes about his work with renewable energies. The photo in the report shows Bush with the American ethanol sponsored car parked along an ethanol production facility. To see the entire report, click here.

Unfortunately the car in the photo won’t be on the track this year. And in an ironic twist, IRL officials recently partnered with a Brazilian ethanol producer when the American ethanol group the open-wheel series had partnered with backed out of its deal with the series late last year.

In other IRL news, Versus, the cable TV channel that will air most of the series’ races this year, is set to start an on-air marketing push for its coverage of the IRL this weekend. The initial TV ads will coincide with the National Hockey League all-star game, which airs on Versus. The cable channel recently announced that Bob Jenkins will call the action for their races this season. Here’s hoping Jenkins sounds a little more lively than he did when he covered the Edmonton race for ESPN last year. I could have sworn he was exhumed just in time to be flown north of the border. Jenkins will be joined by Robbie Buhl and long-time open-wheel (mostly Champ Car) analyst Jon Beekhuis. Hopefully Buhl and Beekhuis will enliven the broadcast. Paul Page was not available because he’s under contract with ESPN and a deal to bring on former IRL driver Eddie Cheever did not materialize.

  • Presidunce Dumbya is gone, let's get rid of the earl too! Then we can all sing I'm proud to be an American...
That's a crapwagon V2, btw. Hard to believe they found a way to make them uglier and stupider, but on those fronts, the earl rarely disappoints.

All 12 of the 'leagues' fan got hacked off when this effanol sponsorship vaporized, but I don't see any evidence that it did anything to advance the product awareness (we don't even have to get in to the fact that corn-based ethanol is an outright scam anyway). It tried the 'league' and it didn't work. Like every other person and company that went before them. That should be a lesson to anyone considering involvement with FTG's farce, but sadly there is no shortage of stupid.

Jenkins drives viewers (what few of them might watch this abortion) away. Period. He's terrible. If he bother to do any prep at all, it never shows. Good choice, earl. That rotten 'league' and its few fans deserve every bit of misery, scorn, derision and failure it gets, and then some.

Cheever is just a jerk, they are luck to have missed out. Supposedly Buhl has potential. Of course, he is also a participant, so how smart can he possibly be? Not very.
  • Whatever CC fanboy. One day you'll realize what a dismal failure CC was. I couldn't imagine being so delusional to the point of being so immature every day of my life. Perhaps someday you'll mature and get over your childish ways.
  • lmfao. x 100000000000000000000000000
  • HA Ha. The EARL finally gets some PR and, of course, the Ethanol car and sponsorship is already gone. Too funny. Will the irl* air before or after Buckmasters on Reversus?
  • One day you’ll realize what a dismal failure CC was.

I'll take a 2.65 turbo over a soft rev limited turd anyday. And Champ Cars safety record and professionalism was light years ahead of the start up Indy Reject League teams.
  • Stan, you are the most disrespectful human being alive, with the possible exception of the leaders of Iran and Hugo Chavez. While I'm not a fan of former President Bush, no president deserves to be talked about with such scorn and low grade name calling. Shame on you.

While I get the points that you and your champ car ilk hammer away at constantly, namely, Brett, SSD, Hooey, et al. it just gets old. TonyCar is still around and I can only hold out hope that some smarter people can give greater vision to the surviving series than has been seen to date. I'm not convinced, but I would rather hold out hope than hammer away at the past mistakes.

There are still some great drivers to watch and they deserve our support, not our scorn
  • What's a Versus? I thought that was used when talking about two sporting teams, like IU versus Purdue where Purdue was the home team. If the IRL is relying on this Versus thingy, then good luck. Too bad the races won't be on real TV. Oh well, I've probably got better things to do than sit and watch a race anyhow.
  • These posts seem to be all over the place, like Sarah Gee-Willikers Fisher and Milkin'-it' Dano on the race track. Auto racing in general, and the IRL in particular, are but asterisks in the total sports and entertainment picture. Especially in this economy, I fear the sport has been done irreparable harm by the split.

Yes, whatever happened to that silly little ethanol thing? Wasn't that just a little overblown and oversold?

And how exciting that Versus will push the IRL during it's All-Star game coverage! Now those are two audiences with real synergy. Wow -- and just imagine the huge numbers! I hate to sound like a natterirng nabob of negativity -- but you've got to be kidding me. This only make it all the more laughable.

Bob Jenkins? Likeable and knowledgeable...of sorts, but he's but a broadcast ripple in a sea of mediocrity. Who did Paul Page ever piss off? He was/is good...great voice, knowledge, race-calling, not the prettiest of faces, but a true big-league first-class racing broadcaster. Why is he doing food fights and mundane X-Game-like crap?

  • Versus is the former Outdoor Life Network. EARL races will appears between episodes of Buckmasters and Bill Dance Outdoors.
  • 3 cheers for Brazilian ethanol! (and saving the planet).
    HIP-HIP-HOORAY! HIP-HIP-HOORAY!! HIP-HIP-HOORAY!!!

And now go to 'Google News' and type in ethanol bankruptcy... and look at all the US ethanol companies going bankrupt.

Hopefully Obama will cut the ridiculous corn subsidies.

It's funny though thinking about George W Bush and Tony George at the same time:
#1) I wonder: who's the bigger moron, George W. Bush or Tony George?
#2) What do the 2 have in common...

Remember kiddies... stay away from drugs.
  • Oh great, now we have another scornful hate monger who needs to learn how to just shut up!
  • I can only hold out hope that some smarter people can give greater “vision” to the surviving series than has been seen to date. I’m not convinced, but I would rather hold out hope than hammer away at the past mistakes.

Are you daft? (Do not answer, that is rhetorical.) There is no basis for your nonsensical, delusional 'hope'. FTG's 'league' has been a plague now entering its 14th miserable year of propped up by inheritance failure. If you still think he's gonna let anyone smarter than him somehow change whatever 'vision' is in his drug-addled mind this week, you're even more deranged than his holiness the inheritor. (There's a disturbing visual similarity with FTG and Blago. Coincidence? Doubtful.)

Did you inhale a lot of lead paint dust in your formative years? Are you posting from a state institution or correctional facility? Can you comprehend the abject idiocy of what you posted?

As for the drivers, and anyone else participating in this rubbish, they do deserve every bit of scorn, misery, and hate that can be heaped upon them. The only way Anton's folly will cease is through lack of participation. To think otherwise is abject idiocy. Calling people 'hate mongers' for telling the truth is disingenuous and rather pathetic.

Why is all this so far beyond the comprehensive abilities of the Scuderia Gomerati?
  • Yeah, right, Stan the Brain, he knows all the answers and lives on the equivalent of the dark side of the moon. You must be like Bobby the Brain Heenan. He once said he had been hit be a chair so many times, his head smells like a@@. Well, you've apparently been hit by the scepter of an evil entity so many times, you head can only think through the haze of your own negativity. To follow your model, to heck with anyone that tries to do anything positive in an effort to revive what was. And, of course, you are much more intelligent and more on track than any driver, any car owner, any mechanic, any support person, any sponsor, any team member, any race promoter, any advertiser, any network person, any sports figure, any fan, did I miss any one. Oh, if they only had you to talk to to help them out of their delusion that you so like to refer to.

Now that you've run down half the people in the metro area of Indy and went all the way to the White House with your all knowing, all seeing, hate mongering, perhaps you can take your game to he**. Everyone there would appreciate you so much!
  • It does make you wonder if Stan and his merry band were more than fans of c?rt/ccws/owrs. I wonder if they were employees who were put out of work by the failed business plan of KK and his buddies. Because people this bitter have to have been more deeply involved than just fans. Sad really.

I also wonder why Anthony lets this kind of nastiness ensue on his blog. This used to be a site with intelligent, respectful commentary, and there is still a little. But there are some on here, on both sides, who need to learn respect. I wish Anthony would give them a warning and then block them from posting if they do not show respect.
  • Hey, IRL fans, note which vehicle was leading the 24 Hour Rolex, why a Dallara! Who would have thought? Must be something to those fine, Italian vehicles?
  • : popcorn:

    berwickguy, what a morAn.

    bring back smackforum!!!!111
  • grand am = sleeping aid. :lo:
  • ok, now i get it. berwickguy - i see the connection:

    foreigners trained in road racing
    empty stands

    just like the IRL!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
  • I wish Anthony would give them a warning and then block them from posting if they do not show respect.

Respect for IMS or FTG? The Gomers always want those who don't kiss Lord Sagamore's rings banned, silenced or ignored. Note to file, it's not going to happen. I had the utmost respect for anything to do with IMS before FTG started to have his visions and fix everything. What I hate is the sorry state of OW in the US. And before who start with CART/CCWS/ KK etc. nonsense because you can't refute anything, I never never stated that CART didn't shoot itself in the foot but the root cause of the F'ed up state of OW is one Anton H. George, the inheritor of Grandpa's hard work and the self appointed dim witted czar of the ruination of OW and the Indy 500.
  • Good morning everyone. It's certainly nice to see lively debate on sports-biz related topics. While the absolute last thing I want to do is silence any camp's voice, I would like to ask all of you to make your points without getting too outrageous. There are a couple of comments above that are treading pretty close to the line of where I will be required to delete all or part of the comment. Again, that's the last thing I want to do. For now, I'm letting those comments stand, except where I deleted two words from a comment I deemed potentially slanderous. Thanks for reading.
  • Respect for each other. I think Anthony got the message. Thanks Anthony, people who cannot show fellow posters respect should not be allowed to post here. The IBJ is a much better publication than that. Let the disrespectful post on the other papers site.
  • the irl gets tons more attention on this blog than it will receive in 10 years on Versus.

Remember folks, that's channel six hundred and three on your satellite
  • Agreed, Indyman, I intend to follow your lead. There's not much hope that the naysayers will change their opinions any way. Let's hold out hope for more positive dialogue. I'm looking forward to it.
  • Lol SSD, and very true.

Hey Anthony, you can delete, censor, change, mutilate anything you want in my posts. I don't care. Funny how the people screaming for others to be 'banned' are all Hulmanistas. Says a lot about their character, or lack thereof.

    :)
  • Stan is right. Whenever Berwickguy gets facts he doesn't like (like the ReVersus deal, foreigners, road races, Tony power grab, aluminum, no sponsors, etc) he resorts to personal insults and name calling.

Like joe Friday says: Just the facts, ma'am.
  • Oh, Mr. Hooey, I'm not the one that threw out the handles: Hulmanistas, Gomerati, Moran (as you spelled it), idiot, deranged, daft, and then there was for Mr. George: the dim witted, drug crazed czar. All I said was that the CC Hanger Oners are hate mongers. That is merely descriptive, not a title. Sensibilities tell me that we need to lighten up. So, that is what I'm doing. Let's cool the jets, big guy, and agree to disagree, ok, and drop the mud slinging. Ok with you and the CC boys?
  • Stan is incorrect, I do not hear anyone screaming for people to be banned. I, for one, am trying to get the conversation out of the gutter and to something that can be constructive. But of course it must make the other side feel better to insult others.

I guess it is a hard life for the others who have no series to root for and seem to fill their days with anger and hatred.

I would love to see both sides discuss facts and opinions without insults and without calling each other names. How about it guys, Berwick agrees, do you?

  1. How can any company that has the cash and other assets be allowed to simply foreclose and not pay the debt? Simon, pay the debt and sell the property yourself. Don't just stiff the bank with the loan and require them to find a buyer.

  2. If you only knew....

  3. The proposal is structured in such a way that a private company (who has competitors in the marketplace) has struck a deal to get "financing" through utility ratepayers via IPL. Competitors to BlueIndy are at disadvantage now. The story isn't "how green can we be" but how creative "financing" through captive ratepayers benefits a company whose proposal should sink or float in the competitive marketplace without customer funding. If it was a great idea there would be financing available. IBJ needs to be doing a story on the utility ratemaking piece of this (which is pretty complicated) but instead it suggests that folks are whining about paying for being green.

  5. Please consider a couple of economic realities: First, retail is more consolidated now than it was when malls like this were built. There used to be many department stores. Now, in essence, there is one--Macy's. Right off, you've eliminated the need for multiple anchor stores in malls. And in-line retailers have consolidated or folded or have stopped building new stores because so much of their business is now online. The Limited, for example, Next, malls are closing all over the country, even some of the former gems are now derelict.Times change. And finally, as the income level of any particular area declines, so do the retail offerings. Sad, but true.
