IRL TV ratings up and down

IRLTVThe Nielsen TV ratings for last Sunday’s Indy Racing League race in Iowa are in, and since there’s never a shortage of opinions from followers of The Score when it comes to these numbers, I won’t offer mine. I will simply state them as Nielsen provided them to me.

The rating for the Iowa Corn Indy 250, which aired starting at 1 p.m. on ABC was 0.8 nationally. According to Nielsen, that’s 870,000 TV households (and by Nielsen's calculations, 1.13 million total viewers). The race’s rating in the central Indiana market was 3.6, which is 38,592 TV households.

By comparison, the May 31 IRL race (also on ABC) in Milwaukee earned a .6 rating. But the local rating for the Iowa race fell in comparison to Milwaukee, which scored a 4.1 rating in the central Indiana market. Both races came up short of that magic 1.0 mark that IRL officials were hoping to see nationally. And in the long-run, IRL officials would like to see the ratings get a lot stronger than that.

The next three weeks will be big for the IRL in terms of trying to build a TV audience. The series races at Richmond Saturday, with the broadcast starting at 8 p.m. on Versus cable channel.

The next two races are on ABC, and usually draw a solid audience. Sunday, July 5, the green flag will drop at 1 p.m. at Watkins Glen, and the series will have another 1 p.m. start time Sunday, July 12 in Toronto. The series’ final seven races will be broadcast on Versus.

  • Maybe Humpty-Dumpty can get those ratings a boost up and over the1.0 mark with his contrived, circus-like, hickadoodle, hillbilly, Monster Truck/WWF/UFC/NASCAR-style of lowest common denominator promotion. Where is PJ Chesson when you need him?
  • I'd love to watch the IRL, but since I don't have Versus I can't. To get Versus I would have to nearly double my price I pay for TV now, and it s not worth it for 1 channel and 16 or so races.
  • I will save iman the trouble of posting - It's CART's fault.
  • C'mon Count, they've already got the killer stunt guy, Joie Chitwood. Mebbe they need the younger Knievel. Or mebbe Hump, Chit, and the Kniev could figgur out a way to shoot TG from a cannon before every IRL race. And wif practice and enouf distance, he gits far enouf distance, he gits a prize package - a soft landing on Milkmaid.
  • When people say there's nothing wrong with the product, that all it needs is better marketing and promotion, that's a pretty good clue they don't know they have a product nobody wants.
  • Saturday night on Reversus? I guess I'll have to check TBS for Roadhouse or Caddyshack 2. And a race on Sunday afternoon of Fourth of July weekend, that's great scheduling. But I'm sure key metrics are up.... LOL
  • I just have a hard time forcing myself to watch CART 2.0
  • BOy oh boy, the haters comin out now. THIs is actually good news for teh IRl. .6 in MIWlwalkee and .8 in IOwa. Tell me that aint growth. WE got the IOwa bump now gone into RIChmond. THat will help. JEt fights in a gymnaseum baby. THATs RIChmond and the IRl.

TUNe in if you got the VERsus. IF not go to WAlMArt and wach it there.
  • The next three weeks will be big for the IRL in terms of trying to build a TV audience.

I'm reasonably confident the past 14 years of epic failure have told us everything we need to know about the earl and its (severe lack of an) 'audience'.

They aren't likely to build anything when the foundation is the garbage masquerading as motorsport that is the calling card of the 'league' since its ill-conceived inception.
  • JEt fights in a gymnaseum baby.

Not anymore Bigirl. Now that the IRL has been CARTified. Richmond is the same as all of the rest - just a very fast single lane parade.
  • The IRl product once again causes a driver to apologise to the few remaining people who have nothing better to do

Once Scott got ahead, we tried our best to pass him, but we couldn't get it done, Franchitti said. Nobody could pass. ... Everybody was out there hanging on.

Dixon and Franchitti, teammates with Target Chip Ganassi Racing, started on the front row and stayed there all night, benefiting from a one-groove race track that made passing difficult, and from their own patience as most everyone else made green-flag pit stops.

Scott Dixon grabbed the lead from teammate Dario Franchitti in the only spot he could have -- on pit road

The result was better than the show that produced it, however, as the smallest oval in the IndyCar Series allowed for one-groove racing and almost no passing all night long.

You just had to keep trying to follow the car in front of you, Dixon said.

Franchitti, who started first and led most of the first half of the race, found out how frustrating it had been for others to be behind Dixon.

But he knew it wasn't pretty.

I have to apologize to the fans because that was an awful, awful race, he said.
    ----compiled from multiple sources

Humpy says monster trucks are the standard for TOneys leeg. I agree, there is more passing at monster truck rallies

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha freaking ha

go away already TOney and take your crap for racing with you
  • Dario is a funny man. What fans, Dario?
  • I'm with you all the way Dave. As soon as Tony got back in bed with the CART guys and slowly transitioned his series into CART 2.0, the racing has gone downhill rapidly. Oh well, that's to be expected. It's CARTerrific!
  • SCOtt you are right. AS soon as PENske and GOnadsi and ANdretti and all them other CARt strret race loosers camed on bored it went downhill. THe IRl needs more EGstreme RACing, more PElfry racing more HEmelgarn RAcing more teams liek LOgan and HUbbard.
  • Too bad tony didn't stay with nascar-lite but had to end up with what he always wanted. It should be Tony George and Jan Shaffer apologizing and not the drivers.
  • Poorly spelled and formatted Bigirl, but completely correct and factual. You're coming around sweetheart. We'll get you fixed yet.
  • yeah, yeah.....blame TOneys crapwagon formula on CART...that is a lot easier than facing the truth
  • what the league needs is more quarter lap efforts like the one Jack Lazier gave them. Now that is real Indy car racing from a real indycar team right there
  • I'm not blaming anything on CART. The simple fact is that the IRL right now is exactly like CART. CART did their thing and it ended with a natural and understandable conclusion. And now the suicidal IRL is obviously hoping for the same outcome.
  • Oh truth do you really expect a legitimate response to such a juvenile and simplistic remark such as your 12:54 post?
  • Poorly spelled and formatted Bigirl,

    Great observation genius.
  • Scott is as delusional as the Visionator.

I don't see any Reynards, Lolas, Swifts, or Penske PC chassis on the track. I don't hear Mercedes, Toyota, Honda, or Cosworth turbo engines.

what I do see and hear are crapwagons and befarter engines.

    Scott is delusional
  • Success as measured by the league

With 100 laps remaining in Saturday night's SunTrust 300, there was a steady exodus by the paying customers from the grandstands to the parking lot.
  • It's funny to hear/read people talking about 'fixing' the 'league'. It won't happen, ever. Changing the spec won't help, replacing Lord Anton the Stupid at this point won't help, nothing will.

The 'league' is a plague, a scourge. The only thing that will improve it in any manner is for it to cease in permanence.

Until then, it will be mocked, derided, and ridiculed for the farce and fraud that it is.

    :D
  • Tony George has turned indycar racing into a dead sport! I know I don't care anymore.
  • This bastardized version of Indycar racing that clabber boy has invented is wearing thin on my nerves, I don't even want to watch these races, let alone attend one. They need to bring back the old style of car they raced in CART in the 80's and 90's, tiny wings and tons of horsepower made for lots of exciting races and good memories, hell that form of Indycar made HEROS! I don't see no heros in the IRL (Maybe Rahal kid) just a ballroom dancer and a pretty little girl.
  • The Richmond race was one of the worst races I have ever witnessed. As someone whom has tried, in vain, to support the competitors of the series (not the kingpin), it is becoming painful. Wonder how much the Captain enjoyed that race with his 2 aces into the wall?

Seeing J Lazier in that piece of junk not even able to complete a lap. My goodness, that makes Salt Walther almost look like a champion. Jacques must be hard up for something to do on Saturday night.

When the race leaders can't even pass the back of the pack - whoa!!! If TG and BB think that junk is going to pass muster and grow on the true race fans, then they must be smellin' too much ethanol.

I think I'll take my Saturday nights out to O'Reilly or maybe even the Speedrome. The IRL - substandard - now for sure.
  • One more thing - for any of you that saw the Richmond Race - the Danica commercials......The GoDaddy ads were bad enough. Those Peak commercials are outlandish, classless and downright obnoxious. Patrick had better wise up to what her handlers are telling her that are ok. It seems as if there are no limits with these folks and they are adding nothing to the racing world - nothing of any value!!!

Danica - I hope you're happy, little girl, with the way you're making money and making a mockery of racing. Must be making mommy and daddy proud. I'm tuning you off and I'm out!
  • Where is the Danica commercial about sliding into her pit box?
  • At what point can I get back in a car?

    Signed,

    Ricky Bobby Treadway
  • Ricky, I may have an opportunity for you. Try-outs at Kentucky soon. I have to be up front with you that we are taking a hard look at PJ Chesson but if a second seat opens up I like you in it.
  • Dad sez we can't give Tony any more money for them POS crapwaggens

    Love,

    Ricky Bobby
  • Wow - berwickguy is fed up with Trashica?

Danica: Even Berwick guy is done with it.
  • You're right, DaHooey, I am. I always gave her credit for her fiery competitiveness. She's a pretty girl, but what has that to do with racing? I'm sick of hearing her talk about her brand. Apparently, Michael has been able to help her understand her temperment this year and she's behaved better. BUT, and a big but it is, those GoDaddy and Peak ads - well she joined the tramp circus and is on par with Britney in the World of Skanks. And, hey, she did it to herself. Like I said before, must make momma and daddy proud. Oh, what a pathetic bunch. I would expect more from my daughter than that, Mr. Patrick!
  • You forgot to throw Paris Hilton under the bus too.
  • Danica's brand stinks. She loves her own brand. She thinks her brand doesn't stink. It stinks. Just like he race car driving stinks.
