ISO announces all-star musical

For years, other cities have been experiencing the unique pleasures of seeing musicals in concert. In New York, they call it Encores! In L.A., it's Reprise!

Finally, Indianapolis is catching on. And while there is no exclamation-marked name for our version with the cast the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra has lined up, excess puncutation isn't needed.

The show, running Oct. 10-12, is "Guys and Dolls." And while the material may be familiar, safe to say it has never been seen in these parts with this credentialed of a cast.

-Gary Beach, from the original companies of "The Producers" and "Beauty and the Beast."

-Ashley Brown, original title star of Broadway's "Mary Poppins."

-Vincent Pastore, aka Salvatore Bonpensiero from TV's "The Sopranos." (I don't have to repeat that character's nickname, do I?)

-Hal Linden, star of TV's "Barney Miller" and Broadway's "The Rothschilds" and "I'm Not Rappaport."

-Hugh Panaro, seen of Broadway in "Side Show," "Phantom of the Opera" and as the title character in the ill-fated Elton John musical "Lestat."

-Megan Lawrence, from "Urinetown" and the recent New York revival of "The Pajama Game."

How can the ISO put together a company like this--one that will be making New Yorkers salivate with jealousy?

Well, the idea behind these in-concert shows is to offer a full musical--only without sets, elaborate costumes, or sometimes even memorized scripts. What you lose in trappings, you gain in musical might, with an on-stage orchestra the size of which no Broadway theater could afford. (And where would they put them if they could?)

Because of the short run and minimal memorization and rehearsal demands, it's easier to assemble a world-class cast.

I'm thrilled that the ISO has added this offering to the mix and hope, if all goes well in October, that we can count on at least one such show a season.

And maybe other theater companies might consider other such shows--as supplemental programming, I would hope, and not as a replacement for full productions.

  • AAaggh! This sounds like so much fun! However, I will be volunteering as a handler (driver) for one of the visiting storytellers in the Hoosier Storytelling Festival that weekend. (For more info, please see www.storytellingarts.org)

I wish I could be two places at once!

  • I'll do it.
Big Pussy, Big Pussy, Big Pussy, Big Pussy, Big Pussy!
  • How will Big P find time now that he has a regular gig on General Hospital, playing the Dad of lovable goons' Max and Milo?
  • I can't wait to see it! I am sure that it will be the first of many. I always loved the Encores! Concert performances allow you to see the strength of the writing and show you that you don't need elaborate sets and costumes to make great theatre.

  1. These higher rates Co. e about only because physicians are now hospital employees. otherwise physicians couldn't charge these rates and share the windfall with the hospital. Community/rural hospitals probably not buying physicians practices and thus weren't getting the windfall anyway.

  2. The incentive for poor people to get themselves off public assistance and "no longer be poor" is even with help...they're STILL POOR! Being poor, even with some assistance, isn't all that pleasant. (I speak from experience) It's a stubborn myth that poor people, who are on public assistance, are sitting in the lap of luxury. You should try living on just those "freebies" that you mentioned and see how meager they actually are. By the way, I didn't mean you had to buy/own a puppy...just pet one. :)

  3. As near as I can tell the minority has ZERO constitutional obligation to offer a quorum to the majority. A requirement for quorum was inserted into the constitution so that tyrannical majorities could not simply shove through odious and objectionable legislation (which is exactly what they did.) By allowing a tyrannical majority to charge fines against the minority for exercising their constitutional prerogative to deny quorum the court as made a mockery of constitutional governance in the state of Indiana.

  4. The voters elected the Reps to make a vote not walk out on the vote. They had to the right to exercise their opinion and vote "no" to the bill. Let me ask you this if you walked out of your job for 5 straight weeks would you get paid? Would you even have a job to go back to? If any elected official walks out on the people they should be arrested for stealing tax dollars from the public. They were elected to do a job and not leave when the job gets stuff.

  5. I have been to several of their locations in Pennsylvania and always go in for 1 item and leave with a basket full of things. I'm very happy they decided on Indiana, now if only they would put the other store in eastside.
