Five injured in 2-vehicle crash

June 19, 2013

Five people were injured—one seriously—in a two-vehicle accident on the northeast side Monday. Emergency crews had to free two people trapped by the crash, which happened just before 9 p.m. at North Dequincy Street and Kessler Boulevard. Quindell Johnson, 21, was listed in serious condition, while four others were in stable condition.

Blaze chases 8 from home

A family of eight was forced from an Indianapolis home by a fire early Wednesday. A renter and seven minors escaped the blaze in the 1800 block of Dexter Street near West 16th and Harding streets. Damage was estimated at $25,000.

Suspicious fire injures 2

June 19, 2013

Two Lebanon residents were hospitalized early Wednesday following a suspicious house fire that might have stemmed from a domestic dispute. Shawn Lambert, 45, was rescued from the home in the 500 block of East Noble Street at about 1 a.m. and taken to a hospital in critical condition. His wife, Dorothy Lambert, 58, was found outside the home. Their dog died in the fire. Police had been called to the house for a domestic disturbance a couple of hours before the fire.

New homeowners find mercury spill

June 18, 2013
Authorities are trying to determine how a large amount of highly toxic mercury ended up at a home in Elwood. Police say new homeowners were moving boxes into the home Monday evening when they noticed spills on the carpet that officials identified as mercury. About 8 ounces of mercury were found on the floor and up to 20 ounces were found in a bucket. The home was sealed off to let crews clean up the substance.

Courthouse evacuated after threat

June 18, 2013
The Madison County Government Center and Anderson City Hall were evacuated Tuesday morning following a bomb threat. Anderson police said they received the call about 8:45 a.m. from a downtown payphone. The caller said there was a chemical bomb in the building. Bomb-sniffing dogs were brought in to search the buildings.

Woman killed in hit-and-run

June 18, 2013
Indianapolis police are looking for the driver of a gray or silver sedan who struck and killed a female pedestrian late Monday night in the 2400 block of Dr. Andrew J. Brown Avenue. Elisa L. Taylor, 48, died in the hit-and-run incident just before midnight. Police said the area was not well-lit and the victim wasn’t crossing the street at an intersection.

Businesses burglarized in Castleton

Indianapolis police are investigating multiple business burglaries that took place Monday morning in an office building at the northwest corner of East 86th Street and Allisonville Road. Intruders broke into at least 11 business suites and stole computers and other equipment.

Warehouse fire still smoldering

June 17, 2013

Firefighters remain at the scene of a smoldering blaze at a 440,000-square-foot recycling warehouse in Indianapolis, two days after the fire created huge plumes of black smoke that could be seen for miles. The fire broke out at 1 p.m. Saturday on Belmont Avenue and Oliver Street. Tires, wood pallets and shingles burned, and at least 30 propane tanks exploded. Firefighters are trying to determine a cause. Damages could be in the millions of dollars.

Man shot to death outside strip club

Indianapolis police have detained two people after a man was shot to death at about 3 a.m. Monday in the parking lot of the Pure Passion West nightclub at West 38th Street and Lafayette Road. Police said it appears the shooting stemmed from a disturbance, and the victim was shot from a passing vehicle. Witnesses said they saw two people leaving the scene in an SUV.

Colts fans will face new security measures

NFL fans won’t be carrying much into games this season, unless it fits inside a clutch or a zip-lock bag. The NFL revealed a new security policy on Thursday that bans all bags except clear plastic bags that do not exceed approximately a square foot, or small clutch purses or other handheld bags that are roughly the size of your hand. Seat cushions will also be banned this year. According to the NFL, the new policy will increase security and speed up entrance into the stadium. The Indianapolis Colts have announced that they will be complying with the new security measures.

INDOT to close U.S. 31 ramp to Keystone

The Indiana Department of Transportation and its contractors will close a heavily trafficked exit ramp this weekend in Hamilton County. The southbound ramp connecting U.S. 31 to Keystone Parkway in Carmel will close at 9 p.m. Friday and reopen by 6 a.m. Monday. INDOT said sections of concrete pavement did not meet its quality standards and they need to be replaced. The contractor, Walsh Construction, is receiving $35 million for its work on the U.S. 31 transformation in Hamilton County.

The man was hit north of the Tracy Road/County Road 600 North overpass about 10 miles south of Indianapolis. Authorities have released no details about the man and why he was on the highway.

50-foot fall kills Greencastle man

A 21-year-old Greencastle man died Monday after falling 50 feet from a wall in Rome, Italy. Andrew Carr, a junior at Marquette University, was spending the summer studying at John Cabot University in Rome. He reportedly was sitting with five friends on the wall above the River Tiber late Monday night when he lost his balance and fell, dying on impact.

Victim dies in double shooting

Police are investigating a north-side shooting on Tuesday night that wounded one male victim and killed another. Police responded to reports of shots fired in the 2400 block of Guilford Avenue at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday to find one of the men critically wounded, and the other hit in the leg. The first man, identified as 19-year-old Damien Williams, later died at Methodist Hospital, while the other was said to be in stable condition.

Animal control shuts down 'bunny ranch'

Neighbors of a south-side home in the 7000 block of Alston Drive are relieved that nearly 400 rabbits have been removed from the premises. Indianapolis Animal Care and Control officers raided the home Tuesday to find the rabbits confined to a garage and shed, both littered with feces. Breeder Richard Cartheuser had been warned a month earlier by authorities to improve the animals’ living conditions, after a neighbor complained about the smell. It was not immediately clear whether Cartheuser would face charges.

Man sentenced for killing teen

June 11, 2013
A Shelbyville man was sentenced Monday to three and a half years in prison in connection with the December 2011 accidental long-range shooting death of 17-year-old Brandon Spangler. Jason Bagley pleaded guilty in April to criminal recklessness resulting in serious bodily injury. Bagley told authorities he thought the teenager, who was playing paintball with his father and siblings on Bagley’s property, was a coyote.

President to honor champion Fever

June 11, 2013
President Obama will greet the Indiana Fever at the White House on Friday afternoon to honor the team’s championship in the Woman’s National Basketball Association. After meeting with the president, Fever players will lead a basketball clinic on the South Lawn with schoolchildren. The Fever won their first WNBA title in October.

BMV offices to be closed Saturday

June 10, 2013

State Bureau of Motor Vehicle branches will be closed Saturday so the Indiana Office of Technology staff can complete a major maintenance project on the state’s computer system. The myBMV.com website also will be down Saturday after 6 a.m. Branches will resume normal hours next week. The Department of Natural Resources said the work will prevent sales of hunting and fishing licenses Saturday.

Thirty arrested at Brown concert

June 10, 2013

Indiana State Excise Police officers arrested 30 people on 35 charges Sunday night during the Zac Brown Band concert at Klipsch Music Center in Noblesville. Most of the arrests were for underage drinking. Last month at Klipsch, police arrested 54 people at a Brad Paisley show, 64 at a May Day music event, and 52 at a Tim McGraw concert.

Woman robbed at gunpoint

June 10, 2013

Two men robbed an Indianapolis woman of her car early Sunday morning after she arrived home from doing laundry. Claudia Edwards said she had just parked her 2003 Honda Accord at Port of Call Apartments, north of Rockville Road and east of Interstate 465, at about 12:30 a.m. when the men ran up to the car. She said one man put a gun to her head and demanded the keys, while the other held on to her 7-year-old daughter. Police are still searching for the vehicle.

  5. I remenber, watching the toll road, being built, through South Bend, when I was 10 years old. I believe, back then that it was estimated, that the toll road, would be paid for in 20 years and then it would be free. I am now 71, what happened? Since the power is in the people, by that, I mean that, we the people are in total control of everything. I, suggest that no one ever use the toll road again, let it go broke. We the people can control the price of everything, from groceries to gas, if we would just do it. If we don't pay the asking price, the sellers will lower the price and if we wait awhile, they will lower the price to what we accept as reasonable. I would like to know why a highway like interstate 94, is so well maintained, a much better highway, than the toll road, but has no tolls. I would also like to know why, a sitting governor, with a term limit, maximum of eight years, can lease, public property, for 75 years. Even though I have transponders in both of my trucks and will not be affected by the increase, I have been and will contine to avoid using the toll road. I make many trips from northern Indiana to Chicago, every year, and I prefer the better highway, I94!
