BMV warns of insurance scam

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is warning Hoosiers not to respond to solicitations from a caller offering reduced insurance rates who claims they are doing it on behalf of BMV. “At no time will the BMV ever contact our customers about insurance rates,” BMV Commissioner R. Scott Waddell said. The calls are coming from the following number: 765-733-1023.

Shooting injures 18-year-old

June 7, 2013

An 18-year-old was hospitalized in stable condition Thursday night following an accidental shooting at an Avon home. Hendricks County police say 19-year-old Leif Senecal was with a friend in an upstairs bedroom when a shotgun he was handling discharged. The shot went through the floor and into a first-floor bathroom, striking Rachel Myers, 18, in both thighs while she was changing clothes. Police said no charges will be filed.

Five teens hurt in Anderson crash

June 7, 2013

Five teenagers were injured at 11:30 p.m. Thursday in Anderson when their car was struck by a semi. Two of the teens were airlifted to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. The other three were taken to hospitals by ambulance. Police say the car ran a red light and turned into the path of the semi at West 16th Street and Raible Avenue. The truck driver wasn’t injured.

Businesses evacuated after gas line cut

June 6, 2013

Several businesses were evacuated and emergency personnel were called in after a gas line was cut near 116th Street and Keystone Avenue in Carmel just before 10:30 a.m. Dispatchers said construction equipment struck a line in the 700 block of Keystone Way. Gas utility Vectren Corp. is investigating.

Nine people flee apartment fire

June 6, 2013

Nine people escaped a fire that broke out in a small apartment building at about 3 a.m. Thursday in the 2500 block of East Washington Street. The fire in the former home caused an estimated $40,000 in damage. One resident jumped from an upstairs window and injured his ankle. The fire’s cause is under investigation.

Woman found dead after fire

June 6, 2013

An Indianapolis woman was found dead after an apartment fire Wednesday evening at Whispering Pines Apartments, 4435 N. Mission Drive, near 46th Street and High School Road. Firefighters were called at about 6:45 p.m. and extinguished the fire in about 20 minutes. The unit where the body of Marsha Bright, 38, was found suffered heavy smoke and fire damage. Authorities are calling the death and fire suspicious.

Man with AK-47 arrested

June 5, 2013
Police arrested an 18-year-old male with an AK-47 assault rifle near the Indiana State Fairgrounds about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. The arrest came after a caller reported seeing a man with a rifle near the old Ivy Tech building at East 38th Street and Orchard Avenue. Three other males were detained, including a 17-year-old who was arrested for violating curfew.

Social club operator charged

June 5, 2013
The operator of an Indianapolis social club was arrested Tuesday and his business shut down following a weekend shooting that left four young people wounded. James Walker, 60, was charged with operating a common nuisance at the Soft Spot Lounge, 1913 E. 46th St. He also was charged with two counts of selling alcohol without a license. Police say more than 100 people were at the lounge for a late-night party when the shootings took place.

Woman dies in Noblesville pool

A 76-year-old woman was found dead Tuesday afternoon in the backyard pool of her Noblesville home. Police say Marylin Webb’s grandson stopped at home to help clean her pool and spotted her in the water. Investigators say they believe Webb fell into the water while working around it and that foul play isn’t suspected.

Gasoline nears $4 in much of state

June 4, 2013

Gasoline prices are at nearly $4 a gallon in many metropolitan areas in Indiana, with a high of $4.07 a gallon in Gary. AAA said Indiana’s average for a gallon of regular unleaded was $3.95 a gallon Monday, up 19 cents in a week. The average cost for a gallon of gas was $3.99 in South Bend and Bloomington, $3.98 in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, and $3.97 in Terre Haute. AAA reports gasoline-supply problems should ease over the next month as some refinery maintenance ends.

Garage fire knocks out power

June 4, 2013

A garage fire early Tuesday morning on the south side of the city damaged an electrical transformer, knocking out power to about 45 Indianapolis Power & Light customers. Fire crews had to avoid downed power lines when they battled the fire in the 3700 block of South Randolph Street about 4:40 a.m. No injuries were reported.

Woman injured after crashing into building

June 4, 2013

 A woman was seriously hurt after crashing her car into a building in Speedway about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. The woman drove her blue Mercedes into Appearances Styling Salon near 16th Street and Lynhurst Drive. She was trapped in the vehicle for about 25 minutes until firefighters freed her. Police weren't sure what led to the crash.

State warns of utility-bill scammers

The state Attorney General’s Office says Indiana residents are receiving telephone calls from imposters who ask them to pay delinquent utility bills. The agency says the callers pretend to be utility company employees and may threaten to disconnect the residents’ gas or electricity. The scammers demand payment but refuse to accept checks or credit cards. Instead, they ask the customer to buy a prepaid debit card and call them back with the PIN number.

Man arrested in shooting death

Indianapolis homicide detectives arrested a 24-year-old man over the weekend in connection with a shooting death. Philip Garrett, 24, was preliminarily charged with the murder of Carl Gildersleeve, 28, who was gunned down in a gas station parking lot at 2434 N. Keystone Ave. about 3:40 a.m. Saturday morning.

Van speeds into Lawrence house

June 3, 2013

A speeding minivan lost control, hit a fence, went airborne and upside-down, then crashed into a house in Lawrence about 2:30 a.m. Monday. Nobody was home at the time and the 29-year-old female driver walked away relatively uninjured. Police say the car was traveling nearly 90 mph in a 45-mph zone. The driver was taken to the hospital for a blood draw to see if alcohol or drugs played a role.

Police arrest 52 at concert

Indiana State Excise Police arrested 52 people on 54 charges Thursday night during the Tim McGraw concert at Klipsch Music Center in Noblesville. All but six of the arrests involved underage drinking. Five adults were charged with providing alcohol to minors.

Burglar sentenced to 45 years

May 31, 2013
A burglar who broke into a Johnson County home and injured the homeowner was sentenced Thursday to 45 years in prison. Jeffrey L. Daniel, 40, of Stilesville, was convicted of burglary resulting in bodily injury for the August 2011 crime. Daniel had four prior convictions for burglary and was on parole during the latest crime.

Family escapes house fire

May 31, 2013
A mother, her two children, ages 5 and 10, and the family dog escaped a house fire without injury early Friday after being alerted by a good Samaritan. The blaze near Indianapolis Motor Speedway broke out about 12:30 a.m. and caused an estimated $30,000 in damage. A person driving by the home noticed smoke, stopped and banged on the door until the mother awoke.

Fair officials seek workers

Indiana State Fair organizers are conducting a job fair Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in hopes of filling 500 openings for this year’s event. Jobs available include ticket seller, parking attendant and security. Anyone in line before 7 p.m. at the agriculture and horticulture building at the fairgrounds will be interviewed, officials said.

A Walmart Supercenter on Pendleton Pike in Lawrence was evacuated Thursday after a bomb threat was reported just before 8 a.m. Police searched the store for more than an hour before allowing it to reopen.

A man was critically injured by a fire in his Wayne Township home Thursday morning. The blaze broke out at about 9 a.m. in the 2500 block of South Holt Road. Officials said the fire was contained to one room and the attic.

Police probe two bank robberies

May 29, 2013
Indianapolis police are investigating two bank robberies that occurred on opposite sides of the city Tuesday morning. One occurred when an armed man wearing a ski mask robbed the PNC Bank at 7007 Graham Road, on the city’s northeast side Another happened at the Key Bank branch inside the Kroger in the Southern Plaza Shopping Center. The suspect was described as a male or female wearing an Indiana University sweatshirt, a braided ponytail, sunglasses and a bandage over his or her left eye.

Three arrested for jail smuggling

May 29, 2013
Two adults and a minor have been arrested for attempting to pass drugs and valuables to a Pendleton Correctional Facility inmate by throwing packages over a fence. Investigators arrested Markeeta Shaffer, Deuandrae Evans and the juvenile after the trio  allegedly threw packages containing 19 cell phones, marijuana and tobacco into the prison’s recreational area. A staff member observed the incident, officials said.

Animal cruelty charges filed against couple

May 29, 2013
Madison County prosecutors have filed formal charges against a husband and wife who lived at a farm where 171 dead animals were found dead. Daniel Ault and Carrie Ault each face 113 charges, including neglect of a dependent, improper disposal of a dead animal, and cruelty to an animal. Prosecutors filed the charges Tuesday in Madison County. The animals were discovered on the farm in April after neighbors complained of a smell coming from a property just north of Elwood. Dozens of horses, goats, sheep, geese, cows and chickens were found inside the barn.

Race arrests down from last year

Speedway police say 23 people were arrested from 8 a.m. Friday to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, well below the 50 who were arrested a year ago during Indy 500 activities. All but five of the arrests were alcohol-related.
