Train derails on west side of city

January 23, 2013

A train derailed near Rockville and Girls School roads early Wednesday morning, sending about 18 cars off the tracks. Emergency officials said all of the cars remained upright and no chemicals or dangerous materials leaked from the train. No crossings were blocked and nobody was injured.

Flu claims 40th victim in Indiana

January 23, 2013

Five people have died from the flu in Marion County over the past week, health officials said Wednesday, bringing the total death toll in the state this season to 40. The Indiana State Department of Health said 38 of the victims had underlying medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, asthma or renal disease. Thirty-three of the individuals were older than 65 and two were younger than 18.

Fire chases five from home

January 22, 2013
An Indianapolis family of five was displaced Tuesday morning after a fire ripped through their southwest-side home. Firefighters arrived on the scene in the 1400 block of Kappes Street about 7 a.m. and found heavy fire and thick black smoke. The homeowners told firefighters they left all four stovetop burners on high in order to help heat the home during a morning when outside temperatures were in the low single digits. The fire broke out about 10 minutes later, they said.

Power failure hits Fishers

January 22, 2013
A faulty electrical conductor near 116th Street and Allisonville Road left more than 1,600 Duke Energy Corp. customers in Fishers without power overnight. The outage knocked out lights at several intersections and forced a Kroger store to close. The problem was reported about 2:50 a.m. and resolved by 5 a.m.

Crash victim flown to hospital

January 21, 2013
One person was flown by medical helicopter to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital following a serious crash near Martinsville at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday. State Road 67 in Morgan County was blocked near Mosier Road for a few hours after two cars collided. The name and condition of the person flown to the hospital has not been released.

Local woman mauled by dog

January 21, 2013
An Indianapolis woman is recovering after being bitten multiple times by a pit bull Sunday afternoon near East 58th Street and Rural Avenue. The woman, who was visiting the home, was taken to Wishard Hospital in serious condition. A police officer was forced to shoot and kill the pit bull after it tried to attack him, too.

Frigid temperatures rolling in

January 21, 2013
A Wind Chill Advisory was issued Monday by the National Weather Service in Indianapolis in preparation for the coldest temperatures in central Indiana in two years. Wind chills of 10 degrees to 20 degrees below zero are expected Monday night through midday Tuesday. Actual temperatures could drop to 5 degrees above zero. Such cold temperatures mixed with the strong winds can result in frostbite and hypothermia.

Shopper finds tot outside Walmart store

A Lawrence mother has been arrested on neglect charges after a shopper reported seeing a 2-year-old boy alone in an unlocked car outside a Walmart store at 10735 Pendleton Pike. Lawrence police say the boy was sleeping. The car wasn’t running, and the outside temperature was 33 degrees. The mother, 24-year-old Alicia Rodriquez, told officers she was buying medicine for a sick child at home. The boy was turned over to his father.

Girl fabricated abduction story

January 18, 2013

A teenage girl has confessed to making up a story about an attempted abduction, Columbus police say. The girl told a school guidance counselor that a man tried to lure her into a van as she walked to school, but later admitted the fabrication to police. Surveillance videos show no sign of an incident. Police believe the girl, who has not been arrested, was seeking attention.

Cops nab hit-and-run suspect

January 18, 2013

A Shelbyville man was arrested by Indianapolis police Thursday in connection with a hit-and-run crash Sunday night that killed 63-year-old Kathy Clark. Greg Hudson, 50, faces a charge of failing to stop after an accident causing death, a Class C felony. He was arrested at his Shelbyville home following a tip. Clark was struck while walking south along Meridian Street near Troy Avenue on the south side. Her daughter said she was on her way to see a friend play in a band.

County offering free flu shots

This winter’s influenza outbreak has prompted the Marion County Public Health Department to offer a free flu shot clinic Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the health department’s training building, 4012 N. Rural St. The shots are available to anyone who would like one. District health offices also will offer free flu shots Friday during posted hours.

Fund started for hit-and-run victim

A memorial fund has been created to help an Indianapolis family pay for the funeral of a pedestrian killed in a hit-and-run accident. Kathy Clark, 63, was killed Sunday while walking along Meridian Street near Troy Avenue. Surveillance video shows a pickup truck hit Clark before driving away. Her remains weren’t found for nearly 17 hours. Police are looking for a light-colored Ford F-150 with a camper shell. It is missing a headlight and a mirror on one side. Donations to the Kathleen Clark Memorial Fund can be made at Old National Bank locations.

Panel advances switchblade bill

The Indiana Senate's corrections and criminal law committee voted 9-0 Tuesday in favor of the bill that would legalize the sale and possession of spring-loaded knives, usually called switchblades. State Sen. Jim Tomes, R-Wadesville, said his bill would help Indiana residents with arthritis or those who need the ability to quickly open a knife, such as paramedics.

Court: Man must support children

January 16, 2013
An Indiana court says a divorced man must pay child support for a boy and girl his then-wife artificially conceived using sperm from another man. The Court of Appeals on Wednesday rejected the Delaware County man's argument that he shouldn't have to pay because the children were not his biological offspring. A friend provided sperm for artificial insemination when the couple was unable to conceive on their own. A judge ruled the kids were children of the marriage and the ex-husband was obligated to support them.

The odds of offensive coordinator Bruce Arians remaining with the Indianapolis Colts rose Tuesday after the Chicago Bears decided to hire Marc Trestman as head coach. Arians, who led the Colts to a 9-3 record while filling in for Coach Chuck Pagano as Pagano received leukemia treatment, was one of three finalists for the Bears job. The Arizona Cardinals, however, also plan to talk to Arians about their vacant head coaching position.

Woman pleads not guilty in son’s death

January 15, 2013
A mother accused of causing the fire that killed her 7-year-old son entered a not-guilty plea Tuesday morning to charges of murder, arson, neglect of a dependent and cocaine possession. Jessica Rogers was charged in connection with the fatal Dec. 8 blaze that killed her son, Dreydon Webb, near Elder and West Washington streets in Indianapolis. She is accused of trying to manufacture meth at the time the fire broke out.

Seven escape west-side fire

January 15, 2013
An Indianapolis mother and four children were among seven people who escaped a west-side fire without injury Tuesday morning. Wayne Township firefighters responded to the Port O’ Call Apartments about 1:45 a.m. and took about 15 minutes to put out the blaze. Smoke and fire damage to three units was estimated at $50,000.

Ball State student dies in accident

January 14, 2013

A Ball State University student died overnight after his car overturned along a flooded roadway in Grant County. Blake A. Taylor, 19, of Kokomo was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Police say Taylor was heading to the Muncie campus when his car hydroplaned on a flooded portion of State Road 26 about 11 p.m. and ended up flipping over into a ditch filled with 4 feet to 5 feet of water.

Man critical after Brownsburg crash

Slick roads may be to blame for a crash that shut down the eastbound lanes of Interstate 74 at the Brownsburg exit for about three hours Sunday. The accident, involving a semitrailer and a passenger car, happened about 7:40 p.m. The driver of the passenger car was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Crash shuts down I-65 near Franklin

January 14, 2013

A semitrailer crash and resulting spill closed northbound Interstate 65 near the Franklin exit in Johnson County for about three hours Monday. The Indiana Department of Transportation said diesel fuel, antifreeze and hydraulic fluid spilled from the jackknifed semi. Lanes reopened after 9:30 a.m. At least one person was taken to an area hospital in unknown condition after the accident. A cause is under investigation.

Ritz plans inaugural events

Incoming Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz announced Thursday that her inauguration will take place Jan. 19 at the Indiana Statehouse, three days after Mike Pence is sworn in as governor. The Ritz inaugural event will feature choirs from Brownsburg and Broad Ripple high schools. Former First Lady Judy O'Bannon and Emmis Broadcasting CEO Jeff Smulyan are scheduled to attend.

Woman rescued from flood waters

January 11, 2013

Emergency crews rescued a woman from her sport-utility vehicle Friday morning after it stalled in flood waters rising from a nearby creek at a Pike Township apartment complex. The woman called 911 before 8 a.m. and said the water on the road in the Woods at Eagle Creek, near 59th Street and Moller Road, was waist high. Firefighters, secured by safety ropes, led the woman to safety.

Police investigate shooting death

January 11, 2013

Indianapolis police are investigating a shooting death on the city’s far-east side. The body of a man was found Friday about 7:30 a.m. outside the New Beginnings Learning Center in the 3500 block of Roseway Drive, near 38th Street and Franklin Road. Police don’t believe there is a connection between the daycare center and the death.

Heating fund nearing goal

January 10, 2013
Additional donations have pushed the 2013 Winter Assistance Fund to within $85,000 of its $350,000 goal. The fund, which recently gained donations from Citizens Energy Group, the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust and Indianapolis Power & Light Co., among others, helps Marion County residents who need help with heating bills. Last year, the fund helped more than 2,700 people.

CareerBliss’s annual list of the “Best and Worst Cities to Find a Job” ranks Indianapolis ninth based on 10 factors gathered from data collected through employee-submitted company reviews, employment trends and job offerings. Los Angeles was best, and Boulder, Colo., was worst.
