Man holds up Castleton bank branch

July 23, 2010

A man wearing sunglasses, a baseball cap and a single glove walked into a Castleton bank Thursday and demanded cash. The suspect startled tellers at the Key Bank branch near East 82nd Street and Allisonville Road about noon, according to the FBI. Investigators say he indicated he had a gun and demanded money. Agents believe the suspect is responsible for several other bank heists in central Indiana.

Man drowns after fishing

July 22, 2010

Indiana Conservation officers are investigating the drowning of a 24-year-old Morgantown man. Matthew Smith and a friend were fishing from a canoe Wednesday night in Lake Maxine, a 16-acre private lake near Plano in Morgan County. As they headed back to shore, the canoe capsized and both men ended up in the water. Smith attempted to swim to shore but didn’t make it.  The friend called 911 at about 8:45 p.m. Emergency units recovered Smith’s body about two hours later in seven feet of water. Police captain charged with child seduction

Police Capt. Douglas Hasecuster, a 17-year veteran of the Shelbyville Police Department, was charged Wednesday with one felony count of child seduction and three misdemeanor counts after a family member complained the officer had seduced a 16-year-old girl from Shelbyville High School. Hasecuster had worked part-time security at the high school since 1997.

Monkey terrorizes family

July 22, 2010

A Hamilton County family barricaded themselves in their home Wednesday morning to avoid attacks of their pet monkey, which broke out of its cage and began tearing up the house. The Patas monkey, named Eujo, injured a family member and the family’s dog. The family, which has owned the monkey for seven years, plans to keep it. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources plans to categorize the monkey as a "vicious" animal, which means the state could intervene if there is another incident in the future.

Man, woman rescued from burning home

July 21, 2010

A west-side Indianapolis man remains in the hospital after sustaining injured when his home caught fire early Wednesday morning. Firefighters were called about 4 a.m. to the fire near the intersection of Kessler Boulevard and Colerain Drive. Neighbors helped get a man and a woman out of the home after they were overwhelmed with smoke. Both suffered smoke inhalation, but are expected to be OK. Fox59 will have more at 4 p.m.

Businesses evacuated for gas leak

A gas main has ruptured in Danville in Hendricks County. Officials say the rupture occurred Wednesday morning at 651 East Main St. The area has been blocked off to traffic, and downtown businesses have been evacuated. Hendricks County dispatchers said the rupture was “fairly big.”

Shelbyville policeman faces charges

July 21, 2010

A Shelbyville police officer has been arrested, accused of having a sexual relationship with a high school student under the age of 18. The police department plans to hold a news conference Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at city hall. Sources say Police Capt. Doug Hasecuster has been on paid suspension since last fall. Court documents show he faces charges of child seduction, furnishing alcohol to a minor, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and false informing.

Man, 70, foils break-in

A 70-year-old man used his cane to fend off an intruder on the east side of Indianapolis early Tuesday morning. Charles Jenkins said he was asleep in bed when he heard a loud crash in his front room just before 3 a.m. in the 2700 block of North Gale Street. He looked into the living room to see a man climbing in through the window. Jenkins grabbed his cane and hit the intruder in the head. The stunned suspect ran to a truck behind the house and fled the scene. Fox59 will have more at 4 p.m.

Homeowner locked in bathroom, beaten up

A south-side Indianapolis man was able to break out of his bathroom after getting locked inside by robbers early Tuesday morning. Two men broke into his home near West Thompson Road and South Missouri Street just after 1 a.m. They roughed up the homeowner and robbed him at gunpoint and knifepoint before barricading him inside his own bathroom.

Suspected shooter caught

July 20, 2010

A teenager accused of shooting nine people downtown Saturday at the height of Indiana Black Expo’s Summer Celebration is behind bars. A tip brought police to Westpark Apartments in the 7800 block of West 10th Street where Shamus Patton, 17, was hiding. They took him into custody without incident. Police and community sources indicate that Patton belongs to one of Indianapolis' most active street gangs, the Rachet Boys, which split off three years ago from a group now identifying itself as the Grimey Boys. A number of the people wounded Saturday night were wearing Grimey Boys t-shirts.

Subcommittee to vote on city utility deal

A City-County Council subcommittee will meet Monday at 5:30 p.m. to vote on the plan to transfer Indianapolis' water and sewer responsibilities to Citizens Energy Group. The Indianapolis Board of Waterworks approved the sale proposal last month. If approved by the committee, the proposal will be referred to the full council for approval July 26. Driver shoots self after chase

A driver shot himself to death after leading police on a chase early Sunday through south-central Indiana, authorities say. The chase started in Bloomington after the unidentified driver failed to stop for police and ended in Owen County after the car got stuck in a field. Police from  Bloomington, Indiana University, Ellettsville, Monroe County and Owen County participated in the chase.

Change likely after downtown shootings

Representatives with the Indiana Black Expo and the city of Indianapolis say changes are likely for next year’s event after 10 people were shot in a series of shootings downtown Saturday night. IBE spokeswoman Elizabeth Hart said she hopes the weekend shootings will not reflect poorly on the organization or event. Indianapolis Public Safety Director Frank Straub said the big issue that needs to be addressed is the number of unsupervised teen-agers downtown during the event.

Hamilton 'house of horrors' torn down

The house on the east side of Indianapolis where seven family members were murdered four years ago is no more.  A crew contracted by the city tore down the house at 560 N. Hamilton Ave. Friday morning. Neighbors now wonder what will happen next with the property. On June 1, 2006, three children and four adults in the Covarrubias and Albarran families were gunned down in what turned out to be a botched robbery. The were found in different parts of the house, with the children in bed. Fox59 will have more at 4 p.m.

Noblesville man critically injured

July 16, 2010
Authorities are trying to determine a motive for why a Noblesville man was shot Thursday while delivering medical supplies to a home in the community of Center in eastern Howard County. Joshua David Glyn, 22, who worked for a medical company, was hit multiple times in the torso, and taken to Howard Regional Hospital in Kokomo and then transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in critical condition. Taken into custody was 61-year-old Charles E. Miller, who lived at the address. Officers saw several long guns, handguns and ammunition in the home. Authorities believe at least four nearby homes were struck by gunfire. It appears that shots were fired from multiple locations inside Miller's residence.

Ambulance service merger to be announced

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard plans to announce Thursday afternoon a merger of ambulance and emergency medical services serving Marion County. A city spokesman said the merger will combine equipment and personnel of the Indianapolis Fire Department and the Marion County Health and Hospital Corp. The two now operate as separate entities that cover much of the same territory. Under the merger, the departments would fall under the new EMS Division within the Department of Public Safety, overseen by Director Frank Straub. The department would receive standardized training for all personnel. The Mayor's office says the merger will spend taxpayer money more efficiently without costing jobs. Motorcyclist hit in drive-by shooting

Indianapolis police are looking for suspects in an apparent drive-by shooting that knocked a man off his motorcycle late Wednesday night near the corner of East 10th Street and North Hamilton Avenue on the near-east side. Police say the 20-year-old victim was riding the motorcycle westbound on East 10th when somebody in a white, extended-cab pickup truck opened fire in his direction.   The motorcycle rider was hit several times in the leg and arm, throwing him onto the street. Officers say the victim was alert when he was taken to a local hospital.

Man attacked on Monon Trail

Cyclist David Clark, 60, is still shook up after getting beaten in the face by three attackers Tuesday afternoon on the Monon Trail. The attack happened near Canterbury Park, a playground at East 54th Street near Kessler Boulevard. "They laughed at my injuries and then asked me if I had any money. I got 42 stitches on the inside and outside of my lip. I had to go see a plastic surgeon," said Clark.

Carmel fire follows possible gunshot

Firefighters were called Wednesday morning to a home in Carmel on Santa Anita Court that was engulfed in flames. Officials on the scene said that a resident had shot and killed himself inside, and that the fire started afterward. Neighbors said they heard an explosion, which investors believe may have been the gunshot. Fox59 will have more at 4 p.m.

Camry collides with mobile homes

A runaway car slammed into two mobile homes on Tuesday night in Johnson County, sparking a gas leak that prompted the temporary evacuation of 40 people. The accident occurred at Glendale Park, 4175 County Line Road. Witnesses said that a Toyota Camry going at a high rate of speed hit one of the mobile homes, virtually destroying it, and then did minor damage to the second. Reportedly, no one inside the trailers was hurt in the crash, but the driver was taken to Community South Hospital for treatment.

Parks get solar-powered compactors

Indianapolis city parks are introducing some eco-friendly trash compactors to give them even stronger “green cred.” Solar-powered compactors are being installed in dozens of parks to save money on trash collection. The cutting-edge receptacles can hold more trash than normal canisters and can determine when they are full, allowing for more efficient collection that saves the city at least $200,000 per year. The devices each cost $3,500.

Fire investigated as arson

A fire on the near-northeast side of Indianapolis was intentionally set, according to investigators. Flames destroyed the vacant house near East 32nd Street and Kenwood Avenue about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. A family had lived in the home up until April, but moved out after another fire. Firefighters say Tuesday morning’s blaze jumped to a neighboring house and briefly caught it on fire, causing minor damage. Fox59 will have more at 4 p.m.

Bloomington police are looking for a man who tried to take photos of a woman in a mall dressing room. The 19-year-old victim told police she saw the man reach under the stall and snap photos when she was undressing in a fitting room at Body Central. She screamed and he took off.

One killed in Hendricks County crash

July 13, 2010

Hendricks County police are trying to figure out what caused a deadly crash Tuesday morning near Interstate 70. The crash happened about 6:30 a.m. on State Road 39. A preliminary investigation revealed that a car appeared to have hit a semi that was stopped on the side of the road. The driver of the car, Dustin See, 24, died at the scene.

Police seek driver in fatal hit-and-run

July 12, 2010

Police are trying to find the driver of an SUV that hit and killed a motorcyclist early Sunday morning at the intersection of South Meridian Street and Southern Plaza in Indianapolis. Witnesses say the dark SUV stopped at a stop sign by the intersection but did not yield right-of-way for the motorcycle. The driver of the motorcycle was killed in the crash; a passenger on the bike received minor injuries. The SUV driver fled the accident site. Fox59 will have more at 4 p.m.

  1. Uh, sorry Johnnie, but you are incorrect. Despite the assertions by yourself and various defenders and captains, sports attendance is NOT off significantly at most sporting events in the US. Variances in attendance has been in the range of single digits, both + & - for years now. MLB has had most of its best overall attendance nubers in the last decade, and that trend has been consistent for most major sporting events. The number one issue cited by most fans when asked about attendance is the overall cost of attending. The presence of HD and big screen televisions in home doesn't even register, as a factor for not attending an event. VALUE in the product is the key, and apparently is something lacking in the current ICS. What other explanation is there when with what is routinely touted as the "best" racing on the planet, fans are staying away in DROVES. A "close" title battle into the last event at Fontana, with the "cars and stars" of the ICS, and who showed up? MAYBE 8K. Sorry, but HD TV isn't to blame for that kind of fan apathy.

  3. If she was worth the $ the public outcry over direct tv dropping them would have kept them on their dishes as we have seen with other companies. I too quit watching channel 13 after she showed up since I left channel 8 because of her all show rather than production results. When Randy on 8 corrected her she had a big head and incorrectly challenged his correction for pronunciation of a city. Other antics while she matures was too much for me with her very inaccurate forecasts. All the forecasters were predicting rain until Thursday except Chris. They predicted sunny on Thursday but instead of rain until Thursday upon which the sun would finally make it out in full glory Chris was right on the money just as I too predicted looking at the radar on weather.gov. One thing I love about Angela is the fear you can see in her every time it thunders in the winter. It far exceeds the entertainment value of her body language (high heel noise drags, depression, etc) when her forecasts are so incorrect. Her hair stands on end, you have to see it!!!
