The 'USSR-ADA'Restricted Content

September 8, 2012
Thank you for [Benner’s Sept. 3] commentary on Lance Armstrong. I could not believe my ears when Travis Tygart of the United States Anti-Doping Agency announced something of the sort of “since Lance Armstrong will not prove himself innocent, we must find him guilty...”

Symphony shrinking from greatnessRestricted Content

September 8, 2012
The recent proposals [Sept. 3 IBJ] by the board of directors and the compliant management of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra to “save” it will only lead to its demise if implemented.

Too many TIFsRestricted Content

September 8, 2012
“Carl” [Aug. 20 Taft column] most likely would have taken the job in another factory at lower wages and taken night classes to train for a better job. He needs the income to support his family.

Informed beats hypeRestricted Content

September 6, 2012
In the same [Aug. 27 Hetrick column] that tells the reader how “…citizens of third-world countries line up for miles, hours and even days to cast ballots…” he also tells the reader that votes in the United States are being suppressed because we close the polls at 6:00?

Correcting KahloRestricted Content

August 25, 2012
After reading Chris O’Malley’s [Aug. 13] article “More trees to get the ax along Central Canal,” I wondered what compelled him to include such a liberal amount of speculations of local antagonist Clarke Kahlo when so many credible sources are available for comment.

Cut Pacers subsidiesRestricted Content

August 25, 2012
Bill Herrick’s op-ed “Run government like a business” [Aug. 20] called for government to take a less-active role in the affairs of business and to run itself like a business. I couldn’t agree more.

Vague language in institutional investingRestricted Content

August 18, 2012
Kathleen McLaughlin’s [July 28] story about state fund investing reminded of a problem in institutional investing today: vague and imprecise language.

Benner again misses markRestricted Content

August 11, 2012
Once again, Bill Benner [July 30] misses a key point in the NCAA’s handling of Penn State when he applauds the NCAA’s “courage and swift response” in his hypothetical reaction to it being his son subjected to sodomy in the Penn State locker room showers.

'Pocket guide' was spinRestricted Content

July 28, 2012
Rather than a pocket guide to the Supreme Court ruling (it did accomplish that, sort of) [Rusthoven, July 9], this is a pocket guide to the laboriously crafted Republican response to the Supreme Court ruling on the Affordable Care Act.

Kennedy wrong on ShariaRestricted Content

July 28, 2012
Sheila Kennedy [July 16] discusses the Islam of her imagination, the Islam of every progressive’s dreams, Islam without several of its crucial features and articles of belief—holy war, martyrdom and the treatment of non-believers.

July 28, 2012
Sheila Suess Kennedy’s July 16 op-ed “This time, Sharia law misunderstood” contains numerous misconceptions and errors about the legislation she purports to address, American Laws for American Courts (ALAC). Space permits me to address only three.

July 21, 2012
After listening to the testimony during the June 5 City-County Council committee meeting, and speaking with both supporters and opponents of the proposed domestic partner benefits, I noticed a common theme of “this will make Indianapolis more competitive.” This is untrue.

  2. We are a nation of speed. All of our younger lives are filled with deadlines, quotas and bottom lines. We start to ease out of the pressured rat-race when we finally see "retirement." The most enjoyable travel on the planet is passenger rail service. Indy to Chicago does not beat Megabus or Southwest Airlines in speed. Passenger rail however has the best seating, mammoth legroon, seat backs that recline to more than 45 degrees and employers that really want you to return as a customer. Indiana municipalities need to maintain subsidies to support this transportation mode. Losing it is loss for all of us.
