Alas, there was no Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra concert to enjoy this weekend. But there was the "Quest for the West" show at the Eiteljorg, NoExit's "Closer" at the Service Center, and Indy Jazz Fest at Opti Park, all of which I managed to catch (although I did fall asleep twenty minutes into the season opener for "Saturday Night Live").

What about you? What did you hear, see or do this weekend? Perhaps you saw "Chicago," "Gypsy," or "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde." My thoughts are here. Why don't you share yours?

  • NoExit's "Closer" at Service Center
I caught opening night of the NoExit's latest offering of Patrick Marber's play "Closer" at Service Center on Thursday. Having not seen the play or movie adaptation before, I was struck by the irony that the interactions among the four characters were akin to the Sartre play that bears the Indy theater troupe's name. The intense flirtations, rejections, and attractions of the characters make acting this play a challenge, doubled with the duty of three characters speaking in a British accent. I was impressed with the actors' abilities to navigate these challenges successfully. I was also struck by Tommy Lewey's direction that deftly interwove separate interactions of characters within the same scene. I found the internet chat scene particularly creative in its staging. This is the third production I've seen from NoExit, and I continue to be impressed by what this company brings to the stage. That's coming from a writer. I'm interested to hear what you thought, Lou.
