“Top Hat”

Indianapolis Museum of Art
Mention thunderstorms and musicals and the obvious thought is Gene Kelly swinging from a lamppost with a smile on his face. But 17 years earlier, Kelly’s rival (and, later, friend) Fred Astaire joined frequent partner Ginger Rogers to dance up another storm in “Top Hat.” Astaire and Rogers kick up their heels after crooning a few verses of “Isn’t This a Lovely Day (to be Caught in the Rain)?” Take a look here or, better yet, see the whole film screened at the IMA as part of the Winter Nights film series. “Mrs. Satan for President”

Indiana History Center
No, that’s not the title for some extremist radio pundit’s view of the possible Hillary Clinton campaign in 2016. It’s the title of storyteller Willy Claflin’s verbal chronicle of the life and times of his great-great aunt, Victoria Claflin Woodhull, a free-love advocate who, in 1872, became the first woman to run for president. Claflin will also offer a family-focused program Feb. 15 featuring his puppet sidekick, Maynard Moose. Details here.
“The Romantic Violinist: Daniel Hope”

Hilbert Circle Theatre
Since being invited at age 11 to perform on German TV with violin legend Yehudi Menuhin, Daniel Hope has performed in just about every major classical music venue in the world, scored a pile of Grammy nominations, and even penned a trio of books (which, alas, are available only in German, Russian and Korean). Here, he’ll join Krzysztof Urbanski for a Valentine’s matinee concert as well as for evening shows Thursday and Friday. The program includes Bruch’s First Violin Concerto and Brahms’ First Symphony.
