Review: 'Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth'

There's a lot to dispute in "Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth," but fact-checking or even just stating opposing perspectives is a lengthy and perhaps beside-the-point preposition. Did I do that when John Leguizamo tried out one of his biographical monologue shows at the Indiana Repertory Theatre? Would I do it if (heaven forbid), Suzanne Somers toured through town with her "Blonde in the Thunderbird" bio-show?

No, of course not. So, for now, let's take Tyson at his word (or those of his wife, Kiki Tyson, who penned the script) and, instead, look at what was witnessed on stage during his Feb. 13 performance at the Murat. That one-night-only performance kicked off a national tour of the show which had a deliberately limited run on Broadway in 2012.

Part stand-up comedy, part confessional, part deposition, part rationalization and part therapy session, "Undisputed Truth"--when it is intelligible--doesn't seem to trust Tyson to be himself. It's at its most endearing when at its least articulate--when Tyson sounds like the awkward guy we've seen in interviews. Other times, though, would-be poetic lines ("My darkest night was ready to rob me of brightest day"--or something like that, it's hard to tell with Tyson) seem like they are being broadcast into his earpiece and repeated phonetically. Transitions get fumbled and lines repeated. But Tyson--sweating and seeming to fight to get his breath--managed to stay on his feet. When things looked tough, there was always a casual, expletive-filled aside to the audience for a laugh or a slide and a story of a deceased relative for pathos.

But then whenever such sympathy or, at least, tolerance, seemed to build, Tyson's reality keeps getting in the way. Just when you start to almost like the guy, he goes and bites an opponent's ear or beats up a fellow boxer in a store in Harlem. He wants to be forgiven for his sins, but he's unforgiving when it comes to those who sinned against him. (Ex-wife Robin Givens gets the worst of it.). His drug problem gets too conveniently mentioned late in the show rather than woven through the narrative where it might temper his stories.

Still, he plows forward to a place, he claims, where he is at peace. If that's the case, I'm happy for his family.

As to his conviction in Indianapolis, Tyson jokes extensively about his notorious time here ("Such a sh--y town. Such wonderful people...") and in prison ("the vacation of my f....ing life").

I didn't do it, he ultimately says,"and that's all I'm gonna say about it."

Until, that is, upcoming shows in Chicago, Grand Prairie, Houston, Phoenix, San Francisco...

  • Undisputed Review
I was initially torn about attending this event due to the train wreck that Iron Mike has become over the years but I couldn't overlook the fact that no matter all of his trials and tribulations, I am still rooting for the guy. The show was close to what I had expected but there were several parts that seemed too scripted, as if they were just memorized lines which in many instances made it much less personable. I enjoyed the early years and the discussion about his current family but I thought he spent too much time on the Mitch "Blood" Green. I would have liked to have heard more boxing stories and how he felt at the very end of his career with losses to Lennox, Kevin, and Danny. The Robin Givens story was told at nauseum years ago. I did enjoy the show and could never quite get over the fact that I was in the presence of one of my all-time sports idols. I did have the chance to meet Mike after the event and chatted with him for a few minutes. I can only hope that this will help him continue to exercise his demons and keep him on the right path. I'm still in his corner rooting for him.
  • Stunned
I'm still stunned Tyson would kick off his "tour" in Indianapolis. I'm even more stunned that people would actually pay to hear a punch drunk felon stumble through a litany of his life experiences as a total loser outside of the ring. And he did do it.
    • Tyson
Needs to bring the Hangover lion....what a laugh that would be be.
    • Save it
I'm saving my pennies. Tyson may be exorcising his demons but your point about forgiveness and making amends weighs heavily. His 15 min. should have expired 16 min. ago. Thanks for a balanced review of a work I'll never see.

You must be a miserable person that has convinced yourself that you've led an exemplary life. LOL.

    5. Problem: most of the people responding to this article don't know about this service AT ALL! Why? Lack of awareness. This isn't IndyGo. This is CIRTA: might as well be the mattress company because they are asleep at the wheel - something like 3 directors over the last year? Playing with federal grant money is great! This "region" wants commuter rail service, has spent MILLIONS on Transportation studies yet can't even support a commuter bus line? This is largely for suburban riders to get to downtown - not for "service people to work in our hotels and restaurants" ! Get your head out of your backside!! These are professionals, students etc. that don't want to fight traffic, save some money on parking, gas, stress.... if CIRTA would put their federal money into widely promoting the sevive to Greenwood, Fishers & Carmel instead of finding directors and studies - this would be a successful service. Our family uses(d) it daily for the last several years - but the recent uncertainty & now unreliability due to cuts from Carmel has been a problem. Now, costs us an additional $350/month for gas & parking ( $4200/year) plus vehicle wear, service, environmental impact ... YES - this REGION needs this this type of service in order to keep growing and getting the people it needs to fill skilled positions in downtown Indianapolis. Think outside of your own car !!!
