Yes, there was a race over at the Brickyard.

But that wasn't the only contest in town over the weekend.

For fierce competition, nothing beat the high schoolers squaring off at the Great American Songbook High School Vocal Competition at the Palladium on Friday. Their weapons of choice were the songs of Porter, Gershwin, etc.

Julia Goodwin from Baldwinsville, N.Y., shot out to an early lead with a disarmingly charming "Dream a Little Dream of Me." But, for me, Miami's Melinda Rodriquez was the first-half front-runner with her remarkably controlled "Autumn Leaves." Acting chops and a playfully resigned attitude helped Chicagoan Kyrie Courter stay in the race with "Taking a Chance on Love."

After an intermission pit stop, Rodriquez's smartly sung "Blue Skies" didn't provide a strong enough contrast to her first-act stunner (although I'd happily listen to a full set of her singing). The emotional resonance of Courter's "I Who Have Nothing" pushed her to the front of the pack. But there seemed to be no doubt in the audience as to who would finish on top after Goodwin nailed "Feeling Good."

I'm assuming most of the lengthy deliberation among the judges (including Michael Feinstein, Sylvia McNair and Jane Monheit) had to do with who would take the second and third spots.

Meanwhile, the Indiana-set documentary "Medora" (which I wrote about here), took home the Grand Jury Prize at the 10th Annual Indianapolis International Film Festival. I could have told you that a few weeks ago, but as a jurist this year, I was sworn to secrecy. "Medora" also won the Audience Award for best feature film, proving that the critics and the crowds don't always disagree.

Your thoughts?

  • the truly GREAT songbook!
As the Executive Director of the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation (out in L.A.), I was thrilled to be at the Songbook Competition - each and every contestant sang his/her heart out! It was a magical evening and we are proud to be supporters. Ella would have been so happy.

  1. Why should I a home owner pay for this"car sharing" ????

  2. By the way, the right to work law is intended to prevent forced union membership, not as a way to keep workers in bondage as you make it sound, Italiano. If union leadership would spend all of their funding on the workers, who they are supposed to be representing, instead of trying to buy political favor and living lavish lifestyles as a result of the forced membership, this law would never had been necessary.

  3. Unions once served a noble purpose before greed and apathy took over. Now most unions are just as bad or even worse than the ills they sought to correct. I don't believe I have seen a positive comment posted by you. If you don't like the way things are done here, why do you live here? It would seem a more liberal environment like New York or California would suit you better?

  4. just to clear it up... Straight No Chaser is an a capella group that formed at IU. They've toured nationally typically doing a capella arangements of everything from Old Songbook Standards to current hits on the radio.

  5. This surprises you? Mayor Marine pulled the same crap whenhe levered the assets of the water co up by half a billion $$$ then he created his GRAFTER PROGRAM called REBUILDINDY. That program did not do anything for the Ratepayors Water Infrastructure Assets except encumber them and FORCE invitable higher water and sewer rates on Ratepayors to cover debt coverage on the dough he stole FROM THE PUBLIC TRUST. The guy is morally bankrupt to the average taxpayer and Ratepayor.
