You-review-it Monday: Art Squared, 'Crucible,' more

For me, a wonderfully packed weekend in Indy arts included the IRT's "The Crucible," the Phoenix Theatre's "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike," and NoExit's "Big Bad Wolf." All very different. All passionately presented. All showcasing strong talent. And all shows I'm looking forward to writing more about. Stay tuned.

I also made it to Fountain Square for the joyful Art Squared festivities, which included infectious music from Playing for Change bands and a playful, spirited community parade that the 500 Festival should take some tips from. And I popped in to see the exhibition of Gino Miles sculptures in the lobby of the Conrad Hotel (Yes, you are allowed to stroll in and check it out yourself).

In between, I chipped away at the pile of Heartland Film Festival screeners in preparation for my annual recommendations column for the October event and started reading a book by a local novelist with a national reputation in hopes of reviewing it soon.

Tired? Nah. This is why I love my job.

So what did you get to over the weekend? The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra's opening gala? Or perhaps its community day free events? The final weekend of "Pippin" at Civic or the opening weekend of "Sunset Boulevard" at Footlite? ATI's "Always...Patsy Cline" or Storytelling Arts' presentation of Patrick Ball? Fiesta? The block party around the Jazz Kitchen?

What did you hear, seem, or do this weekend (besides watch the Colts)?

  • Sunset Blvd.
Attended the Sunday matinee of a fine local production of this fascinating musical adaptation of the film. The cast was excellent, especially the main roles of Joe, Norma Desmond, and Betty. The sets are impressive for a local, limited-time show. Costumes were outstanding. Weakest point was the pit orchestra - it was barely high-school quality. But don't let that hold you back. The show is entertaining and very well done. And at these prices, a real bargain.
  • ISO Open House
Had a wonderful time at the ISO open house! Enjoyed the mini-concerts and behind the scenes activities. Hope they do it again next year. (And hope I won something from their prize drawings!)
  • IRT - The Crucible
saw this twice - opening night and the Saturday matinee. Both performances were equally gripping, although audience dynamic was quite different between the two. There's much more to this disturbing story than what you tried to forget when you had to read this play in high school. Particularly strong performance by the stunning actress who portrayed Elizabeth Proctor (sorry, forgot her name!). Excellent work by the girls - the portrayals of Mary Warren and Abigail Williams expecially stood out. The lighting and sound really added to the overall sense of paranoia and impending doom. Another excellent effort by IRT!
    • Mrs. Proctor
The actress is Elizabeth Laidlaw, from Chicago & she is Dynamite!!!!

    1. Uh, sorry Johnnie, but you are incorrect. Despite the assertions by yourself and various defenders and captains, sports attendance is NOT off significantly at most sporting events in the US. Variances in attendance has been in the range of single digits, both + & - for years now. MLB has had most of its best overall attendance nubers in the last decade, and that trend has been consistent for most major sporting events. The number one issue cited by most fans when asked about attendance is the overall cost of attending. The presence of HD and big screen televisions in home doesn't even register, as a factor for not attending an event. VALUE in the product is the key, and apparently is something lacking in the current ICS. What other explanation is there when with what is routinely touted as the "best" racing on the planet, fans are staying away in DROVES. A "close" title battle into the last event at Fontana, with the "cars and stars" of the ICS, and who showed up? MAYBE 8K. Sorry, but HD TV isn't to blame for that kind of fan apathy.

    3. If she was worth the $ the public outcry over direct tv dropping them would have kept them on their dishes as we have seen with other companies. I too quit watching channel 13 after she showed up since I left channel 8 because of her all show rather than production results. When Randy on 8 corrected her she had a big head and incorrectly challenged his correction for pronunciation of a city. Other antics while she matures was too much for me with her very inaccurate forecasts. All the forecasters were predicting rain until Thursday except Chris. They predicted sunny on Thursday but instead of rain until Thursday upon which the sun would finally make it out in full glory Chris was right on the money just as I too predicted looking at the radar on weather.gov. One thing I love about Angela is the fear you can see in her every time it thunders in the winter. It far exceeds the entertainment value of her body language (high heel noise drags, depression, etc) when her forecasts are so incorrect. Her hair stands on end, you have to see it!!!
